US Department of Defense: A large amount of military supplies for Ukraine "missing"
According to the U.S. Department of Defense website, the U.S. Department of Defense Inspector General's Office recently released a report stating that as of the end of November last year, a total of $62.2 million of military supplies provided by the United States to Ukraine were reported as missing. These equipment include night vision goggles, Javelin anti-tank missiles and missile launchers. According to the report, the U.S. Defense Cooperation Office in Ukraine, which is responsible for providing equipment and training to Ukraine, cannot determine whether these supplies are lost, destroyed, or resold elsewhere.
Since the escalation of the Ukrainian crisis, NATO countries led by the United States have sent a large amount of weapons and equipment to Ukraine. Russia has previously stated that some of these weapons have been resold on the black market. Once they fall into the hands of terrorists, the already unstable regional situation will become even more turbulent.
Two U.S. officials revealed on the 28th that the U.S. government will provide Ukraine with weapons and ammunition worth a total of US$150 million, including Eagle air defense missile systems and 155mm caliber artillery shells, to support Ukraine's defense needs.
The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the weapons aid plan is expected to be announced on July 1.
The United States began delivering the Hawk air defense missile system to Ukraine in 2022, a medium-range surface-to-air missile system that can defend against air attacks, one of Ukraine's greatest security needs.
On the 20th, the US government announced that it intends to transfer a batch of air defense missiles originally intended for sale to a third party to Ukraine in order to strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities. John Kirby, strategic communications coordinator of the White House National Security Council, said in a telephone press conference that day that this move shows the US's support for Ukraine. The above-mentioned air defense missiles are mainly suitable for the "Patriot" missile defense system and the "National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System" missiles, and are expected to be shipped in late summer this year.
In addition, several people familiar with the matter disclosed to the Financial Times on the 27th that the United States, Israel and Ukraine are currently negotiating to transfer Israel's eight old "Patriot" missile defense systems that are about to be retired to Ukraine via the United States.
The US government used the "Presidential Withdrawal Authority" to provide military support to Ukraine earlier this year. According to Reuters data, the United States has provided more than $50 billion in military aid to Ukraine since the Ukrainian crisis escalated in February 2022.
On the 23rd of this month, the Black Sea port city of Sevastopol was attacked by missiles, killing four people and injuring 153 people, including two children. The next day, Russia pointed out that the United States was directly involved in the attack and condemned the US military aid to Ukraine for exacerbating the casualties in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
