This early summer, people in Lingang, a young city and a city of young people, witnessed the artistic glory of excellent Chinese and foreign works. On the evening of June 28, the 29th Shanghai TV Festival "Magnolia Blossom" award ceremony was held at the Lingang Performing Arts Center, and the major awards of the Magnolia Awards found their owners. Among them, "Flowers" won the Best Chinese TV Series, Xin Shuang won the Best Director, and Hu Ge and Zhou Xun won the Best Actor and Best Actress respectively.

In this year's "Magnolia Awards", the hit drama "Flowers" directed by Wong Kar-wai was nominated for nine awards including Best TV Series, Best Director, Best Actor and Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Actress, Best Screenwriter, Best Photography, and Best Art. In the end, "Flowers" won five awards including Best Chinese TV Series, Best Actor, Best Screenwriter, Best Photography, and Best Art, and Hu Ge won the "Best Actor" award.

"Fang Hua" has been aired on CCTV-8, CCTV-1, and Tencent Video since December 27, 2023, and will be broadcast on Dragon TV and Jiangsu Satellite TV from January 2, 2024. According to China's audio-visual big data, the drama's average viewership rate exceeded 1.785%, and its popularity on Tencent Video reached 31,129, entering the Tencent Video hit club. Its Douban score has also climbed all the way to 8.7, which can be said to be a double harvest of word-of-mouth and popularity.

This TV series has an excellent literary foundation. It is adapted from the novel of the same name by Shanghai writer Jin Yucheng, who won the "Five One Project" Award and the Mao Dun Literature Award. It focuses on the early 1990s and tells the story of how small people represented by A Bao seized opportunities and displayed their talents under the tide of the times, and rewrote their fate and grew up with the courage to face difficulties and the determination to be down-to-earth. In addition to the impressive ratings, "Flowers" has become a hotly discussed social and cultural phenomenon in the city, showing the linkage effect of culture, commerce and tourism. "Flowers" afternoon tea, "True Flowers Banquet" and other "same styles" of "Flowers" have swept social media, and Shanghai landmarks such as the Peace Hotel and Huanghe Road have become popular check-in points for Shanghai and foreign audiences.

Hu Ge won the Magnolia Award for Best Actor for his role as A Bao in "Flowers", which was his second time to win the honor after "Nirvana in Fire". Standing on the stage, he choked up several times. "Among all the work in the crew, the actors are the happiest, because everyone has set up the stage and is waiting for the actors to come on stage." He said, "I can finally read out the long list of thanks in my heart. Without you, I would not have received this honor. Director Wong Kar-wai is the soul of the "Flowers" crew and has made every staff member, including the actors, successful."

Hu Ge told the story behind a scarf. Before filming began, "Flowering Flowers" collected props from the whole society, and he also gave the crew some precious personal items, including clothes, wool, and used sewing machines left by his mother. "I want to use this way to leave this memory that can never be returned through images. I am very grateful to the director for giving me this opportunity to realize this wish. This scarf is made of wool that my mother didn't want to use before. Xuezhi is wearing this scarf around her neck."

"This is my first time at the Magnolia Awards. Giving me this award is a recognition of my four years of art work on "Flowering", which was very difficult and long." Tu Nan, who won the "Best Art" award, said, "'Flowering' has boosted Shanghai's catering and tourism industries. We have a large number of consultants who are retired masters from Shanghai hotels and time-honored brands. They have given us a lot of help."

Bao Dexi, Chen Cheng and Jin Chenyu won the "Best Cinematography" award. Bao Dexi said, "When Director Wang shoots women, he has to re-watch her previous films. He pays special attention to her state and posture, all of which are in the language of the lens." In his opinion, good photography depends on many aspects. "From the perspective of the entire visual presentation, the photography award for "Flowers" is attributed to many departments and many people. I also want to thank the long-term photography team, lighting team, and mobile team. These are all factors for success."

He described the entire shoot as being in a university, where every scene's movement, the director's arrangement, and the conception of the entire scene all needed to be worked out. "Our shooting method is the same as that of movies. We rehearse each scene first, and then we set up the lighting. We need to know the actors' positions first, so that we can understand which angle to shoot them from to best suit the plot and capture their most vivid side. We did have a little 'blooming flower sequelae', and after the shoot, everyone was a little reluctant to leave."

"Director Wang is the one who serves the ball, and I am the one who receives the ball. It's just that he serves many balls at a time. At first, I didn't know how to receive them. After a year, I slowly figured out that I had to hit them back in my own way, so that the ball could be played." Qin Wen, who won the "Best Screenwriter" award, said that she has been with the "Flower" crew from preparation, shooting to post-production. "I followed the director to see the production process, and thought about how to write the script from the perspective of using the script."

The selection of the Magnolia Awards is known as the industry's "barometer", and the shortlist each year arouses widespread heated discussion in the society. This year, the number of countries from which the Magnolia Awards are submitted has increased to 57, covering all five continents, and the Magnolia Awards Committee also includes international judges from the United Kingdom, France, India, the Netherlands, Japan, etc.

Liu Yifei and Chen Xiao serve as ambassadors for the overseas promotion of Chinese TV programs. Liu Yifei said, "From Zhao Pan'er in Dream of Red Mansions, to Xu Hongdou in Where the Wind Rises, and Huang Yimei in Story of Roses, I love them, and I love the Chinese culture and female power they convey even more. I hope that more and more excellent Chinese film and television works will go global." Chen Xiao said, "As an actor, I am honored to convey Chinese culture and express Chinese emotions in my roles. I hope that more works will communicate with the audience and connect with the world."

"Why China" won the "Best Documentary Series" award. This documentary is based on the major research results of the "Chinese Civilization Origins Project" and "Archaeology China", relying on the fruitful results of a century of Chinese archaeology, and using vertical time as a clue to trace the foundation, origin, early formation and development of Chinese civilization. "The last time I stood on the stage of the Magnolia was 16 years ago. "Why China" witnessed that our love for documentaries will not change." Chief Director Gan Chao said: "Archaeology has a method called seeing people through objects, through cultural relics to enter the era of the ancients and their daily lives. On the one hand, the documentary enriches the material and spiritual civilization of this land, and also sees the life of curling smoke, rising and setting sun and moon, and the figures of our ancestors fighting through difficulties."

The TV series "Drifting in a Circle" won the "Best Overseas TV Series" award. The creator said with emotion: "This drama was completely produced in South Africa. It is a milestone to win such an important award in Shanghai."

"I feel full of strength." Ning Li, who won the Best Supporting Actor award for his role as Song Chen in "Under the City", said with a smile, holding the trophy in one hand and the microphone in the other. "When I read the script, I felt that a person who has experienced many hardships in life hides his kindness and softness, but when he encounters a real need to present justice, he will still stand up, even if he has to sacrifice his life in the end." Before joining the crew, he talked with the director on the phone for two hours and was completely moved by the script. "Over the years, I have worked with many young directors, many of whom are making feature films for the first time. Their creations are very bold and dare to subvert traditions, which has taught me a lot."

"The Magnolia Award is the highest award and a recognition of an actor's career." Zhou Xun won the Best Actress Award for "The Imperfect Victim". She said, "Like all the winners said, a good work is the joint efforts of the front and back of the stage. I want to pay tribute to lawyers across the country. I hope you are in good health and help more people in need."

This year, the Shanghai TV Festival Awards Ceremony, which has a history of 38 years, moved out of the city for the first time and moved to Lingang. The "Magnolia Blossom" red carpet ceremony broke the convention of red and adopted a blue gradient with a water ripple effect, which was refreshing. Over the past year, the most shining stars in the TV industry at home and abroad have gathered in this "young city, the city of young people".

Zhu Yonglei, member of the Party Leadership Group and Deputy Director of the State Administration of Radio and Television; Zhao Jiaming, member of the Standing Committee of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee and Minister of the Propaganda Department; and Chen Jinshan, member of the Standing Committee of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee, Secretary of the Party Working Committee and Director of the Management Committee of the Lingang New Area, attended the event.

The Literature and Creative Writing Center of Shanghai University, established in the same year, is one of the earliest creative writing majors in domestic universities. This year is therefore considered the "first year" of creative writing in China, and since then, creative writing has rapidly developed in Chinese universities through disciplines, courses, or other forms. In April this year, nine universities including Peking University, Beijing Normal University, Fudan University, and East China Normal University jointly established the "China University Creative Writing Alliance" in Shanghai, promoting the sharing of university resources to support the construction of the creative writing discipline. This move has attracted attention from academia and society. Shanghai is the "highland" of creative writing in China.
