Iran's presidential election will enter the second round of voting, no candidate won more than half of the votes
On June 29, local time, the Iranian Ministry of Interior announced that the vote counting for this presidential election was completed. None of the four presidential candidates received more than half of the votes, so the top two candidates with the highest votes in this round of voting will enter the second round of voting.
In the second round of voting, former Iranian Health Minister Pezeshkian and former Iranian chief nuclear negotiator Jalili will compete. The second round of voting will be held on July 5 local time.
Voting for Iran's 14th presidential election officially began at 8 a.m. local time on June 28. More than 61 million voters are eligible to vote in this election, and a total of 60,000 polling stations have been set up in Iran and abroad.
The 14th Iranian presidential election was originally scheduled for 2025, but was held ahead of schedule after President Raisi was killed in a helicopter crash on May 19. On June 9, the Iranian Ministry of Interior announced a list of six presidential candidates who had passed the qualification review of the Guardian Council of Iran, including Iranian Parliament Speaker Qalibaf, Vice President Hashemi, Tehran Mayor Zakhani, former Chief Nuclear Negotiator Jalili, former Interior Minister Pour-Mohammadi, and former Health Minister Pezeshkian. Since then, Hashemi and Zakhani have successively withdrawn from the election.
Iran's presidential election is held every four years. The president is directly elected by voters and can be re-elected for one term. In the first round of voting, the candidate who wins more than half of the votes will be directly elected.
