On June 29, with the premiere of "Golden Embroiderer" by Shanghai Xindongyuan Shanghai Opera Troupe at Tianchan Yifu Stage, the 2024 Fifth Shanghai Private Opera Troupe Shanghai Opera Exhibition Season kicked off. This year, the annual Shanghai Opera Month was upgraded to the Shanghai Opera Season for the first time. The 20 performances in the past 30 days have become more than 300 performances in more than 100 days. The number of performances in the Shanghai Opera Season, which lasts until October, is the highest in history.

"In 2024, Shanghai Opera Month will be expanded to Shanghai Opera Season for the first time. This is not only a change of name, but also a firm commitment to the inheritance and development of Shanghai opera culture, and a full trust in Shanghai opera's creative and performing capabilities and audience base." Wei Zhi, general convener of the Municipal Performing Arts Industry Association, revealed that this year 25 plays from 14 private Shanghai opera troupes have been selected and included in the Shanghai Opera Season repertoire list. The association encourages Shanghai opera troupes to perform in the five new cities of Jiading, Songjiang, Qingpu, Fengxian and Nanhui, as well as in remote suburbs such as Jinshan, Baoshan, Chongming and Minhang.

In the more than three months of the Shanghai Opera Season, are the actors and repertoires sufficient to meet the audience's needs? Wei Zhi said that the Shanghai Opera Season consists of three performance series: the first series "core repertoire" comes from the excellent repertoires performed by Shanghai's outstanding private theaters this year, providing repertoire demonstration and quality assurance for this Shanghai Opera Season; the second series "participating tour" repertoires are mainly based on the more mature repertoires of grassroots Shanghai Opera teams, and the expert selection group selects a batch of high-quality repertoires, such as the classic Shanghai Opera "Sparks". The third series "external congratulatory repertoires" comes from the Shanghai Opera Season absorbing some Shanghai Operas with certain quality and Shanghai Opera troupes in the suburbs with potential for improvement to participate in the performances, among which there are many audiences who are familiar with classic excellent repertoires and like actors, and further increase the number of performances in the five new cities and suburbs.

"Shanghai Qinyuan Shanghai Opera Troupe has participated in the performance for five consecutive years, witnessing the Shanghai Opera Month and Shanghai Opera Season, the scale is getting bigger and bigger, and the number of performances each year exceeds the plan." On June 29, Wang Qin, director of Qinyuan Shanghai Opera Troupe, said that this year the troupe will participate in the Shanghai Opera Season with its latest play "Song of the Drunken Soul", which is a brand-new original play like "Golden Embroidered Lady". "For so many years, we have always insisted on going to the grassroots and performing at the doorsteps of the people, even in the face of strong winds and rainstorms. "Wang Qin said frankly that as a costume play, "Song of the Drunken Soul" is a costume play, and the actors wear full headgear on stage, with three layers of costumes inside and outside, and they are soaked every time they finish the performance. "Fortunately, the performance conditions are much better now than before. We have air conditioning in the suburbs, and the audience can watch the show comfortably. When getting close to the actors, everyone exclaimed, 'Shanghai Opera costume plays are so beautiful' and 'Teacher Wang, can we take a photo with us'."

"The most important thing is the recognition and love of the audience." Wang Qin said that Shanghai Opera Month has promoted the increase in performances and created more opportunities for the troupe. "Organizers I don't know often come to me and want to invite the troupe to perform. I am grateful to the Municipal Performance Industry Association for building a brand, which has given the troupe the motivation to create more and better works." In Wei Zhi's view, the Shanghai Opera Season has become another brand extended from the "Shanghai Outstanding Private Theater Troupe Exhibition", further promoting the influence of Shanghai's outstanding Shanghai opera works and allowing the local drama to take root more deeply.

The application and review of this Shanghai Opera Season started in early May. After review and selection, the performance repertoire group was finally formed. The Shanghai Opera Season is inclined towards realistic themes, while paying attention to inheriting the city's cultural context and classic repertoires, giving traditional genres room to play, and encouraging the performance of repertoires featuring outstanding new talents in Shanghai Opera. The opening drama "Golden Embroidered Lady" is a modern Shanghai opera re-staged by Shen Huiqin, the head of the New East Garden Shanghai Opera Troupe, in memory of her teacher Zhu Huiqin. It tells a touching story of the unity of the army and the people during the Shanghai Liberation War. It is directed by Shen Gang, a national first-class director, and the music is designed by Ru Jinshan, a national first-class composer. Qian Sijian, Li Jianhua and other famous actors will perform on the same stage. "Core repertoires" such as "Huang Baomei" by Wenhui Shanghai Opera Troupe, "Golden Embroidered Lady" and "Flying Over Bridge No. 7" by New East Garden Shanghai Opera Troupe, "Soul of Wine" by Qinyuan Shanghai Opera Troupe, and "Banqiao Frost" by Xinhong Folk Music Shanghai Opera Troupe will be the first to go deep into the grassroots for performance.

As a traditional opera that originated in Shanghai, Shanghai opera has a broad and deep foundation in Shanghai. The number of private Shanghai opera troupes in Shanghai has ranked first among all private troupes. At the opening ceremony, many audiences looked forward to the new Shanghai operas that are beautiful and pleasant to listen to every year. Wei Zhi said that this Shanghai opera season will insist on delivering the operas to the doorsteps, going deep into the grassroots, serving the people, and let the people truly feel that "Shanghai opera is right beside them."
