Avoiding Trump, Hillary goes to Columbia University to teach and returns to her "old profession" in public affairs | University Campus | Hillary
After nearly 50 years, former US Secretary of State and former First Lady Hillary Clinton has returned to university campuses and resumed her old profession of teaching. On September 6th, students returning to Columbia University in the new semester were excited to find that Hillary had stepped onto the podium of her own school and shared her experiences as Secretary of State. However, she hardly talked about former President Trump in class, "this class is not about him.". In this regard, some public opinion believes that after retiring from politics, Hillary's choice to teach at Ivy League University may be a good destination.
Hillary starts classes and avoids talking about Trump
On the afternoon of September 6th local time, students gradually entered the Altschul auditorium at Columbia University. Here, they will spend a week with Hillary.
It is reported that Hillary's course at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University is called "Walking into the White House War Room.". The Situation Room is a place where key officials such as the President, Vice President, Secretary of State, and Secretary of Defense of the United States conduct rapid consultations and responses to domestic and international emergencies.
In the first class, Hillary recalled the scene of her first step into the war room. That was in 2009, when Obama had already been elected president and Hillary was also nominated as Secretary of State. As the future "Secretary of State", Hillary received a message from then Secretary of State Rice asking her to go to the war room to listen to a report and understand the potential threats that may occur at Obama's inauguration ceremony.
Hillary said that many times, she didn't know what crisis had occurred until she walked into the war room. "These things haven't made headlines yet, sometimes they never make headlines, and that's not all bad things," she said.
Students also noticed that Hillary hardly mentions her old rival Trump in this class.
"This class is not about him," Hillary said, stating that she did not even closely monitor the Republican primary in the 2024 election this year. Regarding polls showing Trump's far leading approval rating, Hillary said she hopes well intentioned individuals from all parties understand "how terrifying the consequences of his return to the White House will be.".
It is reported that the course is co taught by Hillary and Karen Yarch Miro, Dean of the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. The course will deconstruct how the White House made decisions with geopolitical consequences through the experiences of the two individuals.
At present, a total of 370 graduate and undergraduate students from Columbia University have been admitted to the course, all of whom have passed screening by the US Secret Service.
According to the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University, Hillary did not serve as a visiting professor, but as a full professor. The spokesperson refused to disclose details of Hillary's salary.
Columbia University also announced on the 7th that, under the leadership of Hillary and others, the School of International and Public Affairs has established the Institute of Global Politics. The research institute will gather more than ten scholars and industry leaders to collaborate with researchers and students to solve social and political issues on a global scale.
Returning to the "old profession"
In fact, this is not Hillary's first time teaching, but a return to her old profession.
In the early stages of her career, Hillary taught at a university. In 1974, Hillary and her then boyfriend Bill Clinton moved to the latter's hometown of Arkansas. Afterwards, Hillary began teaching at the University of Arkansas and was one of only two female law school instructors at the time.
A former student of hers once stated in a media interview that Hillary is very serious in class and never procrastinates. She is also very strict with the law and doesn't have many interesting anecdotes.
In fact, due to Hillary's good relationship with Columbia University, there were rumors as early as 2017 that she would teach at Columbia University. This also means that she will work with her daughter Chelsea Clinton at this Ivy League university. Chelsea is currently serving as an assistant professor of health policy and management at Columbia University.
For 75 year old Hillary, who chose to return to college after nearly 50 years, some people believe that this may be a good destination for her.
In 1993, after Clinton took office in the White House, Hillary actively participated in politics as the then First Lady and later became a senator and Secretary of State. During this period, Hillary ran for the presidency several times, but all of them ended in failure.
During the 2016 election, Hillary was exposed for using her personal email to send and receive emails containing confidential information, which greatly undermined her credibility among voters. In fierce competition, she narrowly defeated Trump due to the electoral college system, just one step away from taking office in the White House.
After being hit by this, although Hillary faded out of politics, she still occasionally appeared in the spotlight.
On the one hand, Hillary never stops writing and constantly releases new books.
In recent years, Hillary has published memoirs such as "Experiencing History" and "Difficult Decisions", telling the story of her experiences working with former President Obama. She also published "What Happened", which tells the story of losing to Trump in the 2016 election and selling 300000 copies within a week. She even co authored a political suspense novel called "Terrifying Nation" with others.
On the other hand, Hillary has repeatedly hinted at returning to politics.
In 2019, Hillary stated in an interview that although she chose not to participate in the presidential election, she would continue to "work and speak out" for things she believed in. When asked if she would run for public office again, Hillary also hesitated.
Regarding Hillary's ultimate choice of teaching and nurturing, some public opinion believes that this new job may allow her to become a foreign policy expert again, rather than a defeated member of Trump's team, and be active in the public eye.
