Another Confucius Institute was established in Europe in China. The Confucius Institute at the University of Siatica in Greece recently held its unveiling ceremony in Athens. It is reported that this is the fourth Confucius Institute established in Greece.
The Greek university stated that the University of West Attica is the second largest university in terms of student numbers in the Attica region, where the capital Athens is located. Strengthening cooperation with foreign universities is in line with the university's outward oriented educational philosophy.
The co organizer, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, stated that the establishment of the Confucius Institute in collaboration with West Attica University is not only to promote the sharing of Chinese culture, but also to enable more friends to understand China, fall in love with traditional Chinese medicine, and jointly explore the exhibition and development of traditional Chinese medicine on the international stage.
"China Greece relations are ushering in new development opportunities, and there is great potential for cultural exchanges, mutual learning of civilizations, and educational cooperation between the two countries." Chinese Ambassador to Greece, Xiao Junzheng, delivered a speech, stating that Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the University of West Attica have successfully held the unveiling ceremony of Confucius Institutes, demonstrating the solid belief and firm confidence of China Greece in further enhancing and deepening mutual learning and cultural exchanges.
The reporter from Jiefang Daily's Shangguan News learned that as a Chinese cooperative institution of the New Confucius Institute, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a "Double First Class" construction university in China, officially signed a cooperation agreement with the University of West Attica in Greece in February 2023. On that day, the signing ceremony for the cooperation between the China International Chinese Education Foundation, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and West Attica University in the construction of the Confucius Institute was held in Athens. The Confucius Institute jointly built by both parties combines the professional characteristics and disciplinary advantages of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine to carry out cultural cooperation in Chinese education and educational research in the field of traditional Chinese medicine.
According to the plan, the two schools will also build traditional Chinese medicine clinics, providing clinical internship venues while meeting the needs of local people for traditional Chinese medicine health services, and making the Confucius Institute the first Confucius Institute in Greece with deep characteristics of traditional Chinese medicine.
The University of West Attica was formed in March 2018 by the merger of the Athens Institute of Technical Education and the Biraeus University of Applied Sciences. In 2019, the National College of Public Health also joined the newly established University of West Attica. The University of West Attica currently has 6 colleges, including 27 majors, offering undergraduate, graduate, continuing education, and lifelong learning courses. The number of students on campus ranks third in Greece.
Since 2016, China and Greece have established friendly cooperation and exchange relations. In 2018, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine's first overseas "Tai Chi Health Center" was established at West Attica University, and a total of six teachers were sent to Greece to teach Tai Chi, which was well received by the Greek people. In 2018 and 2019, nearly 50 students from the Department of Physiotherapy of Western Attica University also went to Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and its affiliated hospitals for theoretical study and clinical practice of acupuncture and moxibustion.
