This "treasure" Tang style garden in North Shanghai is officially open to the public today.
The reporter learned from Luodian Town in Baoshan District that the second phase of the Baoshan Temple project has only officially opened. Baoshan Temple was first built in 1511 AD, and as time passed, the temple underwent a series of ups and downs. In May 2005, Baoshan Temple was relocated and rebuilt. The temple will be constructed in two phases, with the first phase being Baoshan Temple, a traditional Tang style wooden structure complex. It was completed and opened to the public in January 2011; The second phase of the project is a Tang style garden.
Baoshan Temple, with a total construction area of approximately 12000 square meters, is the largest Buddhist temple in Shanghai. The original site preserves two precious cultural relics and ancient buildings, the Daxiong Hall and the Heavenly King's Treasure Hall. At the same time, the entire wooden structure is constructed using Tang Dynasty construction techniques, and the layout, shape, style, and method are all based on Tang and Song Dynasty French style. The mortise and tenon technique presents the ancient and magnificent charm of late Tang palace style architecture.
The new temple of Baoshan Temple was designed and planned by Mr. Yu Zongqiao, a disciple of Liang Sicheng. It adopts the traditional layout of the Jialan vertical axis, and all the materials used in construction are selected according to the requirements of the "Construction Method" written by Li Jiexiu of the Song Dynasty a thousand years ago. After completion, the architecture of Baoshan Temple won the National Design Huacai Gold Award, the Shanghai Construction Engineering "Magnolia Award", and the highest honor of Chinese construction engineering quality, the "Luban Award". The Tang style wooden structure construction technique of Baoshan Temple has been selected as one of the sixth batch of intangible cultural heritage projects in Shanghai.
In 2011, the Baoshan District government created nearly 40 acres of land on the east side of Baoshan Temple as a garden site. Only Garden, taken from the Buddhist scripture "Only Tree for Solitary Garden", symbolizes a garden for moral education and a lecture hall for upward goodness. The park is equipped with buildings such as the Golden Pagoda, Buddha Fragrance Pavilion, Songtao Pavilion, Water Heart Pavilion, Corridor Bridge, and Flower Rain Pavilion, showcasing the Tang style garden style with changing scenery.
The architectural layout within the park is mainly centered around the Golden Pagoda. The golden pagoda is 55.3 meters high, echoing the the Shakya ManiHall in the Jialan courtyard of Baoshan Temple from afar. It is worth mentioning that the tower is the first seven story pure wood structure imitation Tang style high-rise building built in China in nearly a thousand years. The Golden Pagoda has three rooms in width and three rooms in depth, with a square base. The center of the bottom layer of the tower is 4.8 meters, and the secondary room is 3.6 meters. A 2.8 meter wide corridor has been added, with a total width of 17.6 meters. Adopting traditional tower style structures such as beam frames to share and transmit the load on the floor. In November 2015, the 1:5 model of Juyuan Jinta passed the seismic resistance test of Tongji University and successfully passed the test for a magnitude 8 earthquake; On December 11, 2019, Juyuan Golden Pagoda passed the technical acceptance of the wooden structure tower design and construction technology research project.
The Shuixin Pavilion faces the water on three sides, and the main building is connected by a circular corridor. The corridor is built with beams and columns above the water surface to form a platform. The water is surrounded by low level railings with armchairs for visitors to sit, rest, and enjoy the scenery. The Foxiangge is octagonal, and its main body is a double eaved pyramidal roof attic style building, with a golden top decorated on the top; The Songtao Pavilion is a courtyard style building with a main hall in the middle and warehouses on both sides. The east and west wings are exhibition halls, forming an enclosed courtyard; The bridge pavilion is erected above the water surface, with a width of three rooms and a depth of one room. It is open on all sides and does not have any doors or windows.
At the opening of the park, Zhuyuan Songtao Pavilion will hold the "Zhuyuan Elegant Collection" - an invitation exhibition of famous marine artists' paintings. In the future, it will also be developed into a new regional cultural landmark that integrates cultural popularization, intangible cultural heritage inheritance, and health and leisure.
