Is artificial rainfall reduction feasible?, Rain will continue until July, Shanghai will have local heavy rain tomorrow morning
The rain in Shanghai can't be stopped. From 0:00 to 17:00 today, heavy rain fell across the city, and some areas experienced torrential rain. The Shanghai Meteorological Observatory predicts that there will still be torrential rain in Shanghai tomorrow morning, and the rain will continue until July.
As of press time, the yellow warning for thunderstorms in Shanghai is still in effect. It is expected that from tonight to tomorrow morning, Shanghai will be cloudy with showers or thunderstorms, with local rainfall reaching torrential rain, which will also affect the morning commute. The rain will weaken during the day tomorrow, but will get heavier at night.
Before July 2, due to the overall little change in the position and intensity of the subtropical high pressure, the center of heavy rainfall was located in the vicinity of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, but the plum rain belt changed from an east-west distribution to a northeast-southwest distribution. After that, the subtropical high pressure extended westward and northward, and the center of heavy rainfall moved northward to near the Huai River.
From June 28, affected by the swing of the plum rain belt, Shanghai will have more frequent marginal showers or thunderstorms, and precipitation will no longer be as continuous as it has been recently. On July 3, as the subtropical high pressure moves northward, Shanghai will have afternoon thunderstorms, with the highest temperature approaching the 35℃ high temperature line.
The rain keeps falling, is it feasible to artificially reduce rainfall? Regarding artificial rainfall reduction, Li Ning, a weather analyst at China Weather, said there are two main methods.
One method is to carry out artificial rainfall enhancement operations in the upstream area of the destination before the clouds carrying water vapor reach the destination, so that the rain will fall in advance. When the day when rain is originally expected comes, the water vapor has been consumed and naturally there will be no rain.
Another method is to "hold back" the rain. Since water vapor generally needs to attach to condensation nuclei to condense into water droplets, the condensation nuclei will be over-seeded in the cloud layer, so that the condensation nuclei content in the precipitation cloud reaches 3 to 5 times the precipitation standard, resulting in a significant reduction in the amount of water that can be "allocated" to each condensation nucleus, and it is impossible to form large enough water droplets to fall to the ground. However, this method can only work well for precipitation with a small range and weak intensity.
"For the large rainfall belt thousands of kilometers long on the north side of the subtropical high pressure, such high-intensity and long-duration precipitation cannot be intervened by human power," Li Ning analyzed.
Since we cannot interfere with nature, when faced with heavy rain and high temperatures, we must take relevant response measures, take active precautions, and reduce the losses caused by natural disasters.
