Is it feasible to get vaccinated on campus? The disease control department has given suggestions, but parents have reported that their children cannot schedule a flu vaccine
Since September, data from medical institutions in Shanghai has shown a significant increase in influenza cases, with some pediatric medical institutions experiencing an increase of over 50% compared to before. The main population affected by this round of influenza is primary school students, and the prevalent strain is A type H3N2, which is different from the A type H1N1 strain that spread from February to April this year. Pediatric experts said that over the past five years, Type A H3N2 has only been sporadic or slightly prevalent in the short term, with little "trouble making". In addition to the COVID-19 and other factors, it has led to the low immune level of the population to Type A H3N2, so it has become the main epidemic strain in the recent stage.
In order to effectively protect themselves, getting vaccinated against influenza has become a choice for many citizens, their elderly, and children. However, recently there have been complaints from citizens that, unlike most community health service centers in Pudong, influenza vaccines have been delivered and started to be sold. They have called the community health service centers in Pudong multiple times, but the vaccines have not yet arrived. The Jiefang Daily Shangguan News reporter inquired about the current situation with the Pudong New Area Center for Disease Prevention and Control.
Pudong New Area: Plan to add weekend vaccination outpatient hours
According to the "Technical Guidelines for Influenza Vaccine Prevention and Vaccination in China 2023-2024" released last week, the end of September to the end of October is the best time period for influenza vaccination, and vaccination during this time period has the best preventive effect. Therefore, according to the standardized process, starting vaccination in Pudong New Area from the end of September is in compliance with regulations.
Based on past experience, the initiation time for influenza vaccination is indeed around late September. How was this time chosen? According to the explanation, antibodies with protective levels can generally be produced 2 to 4 weeks after receiving the influenza vaccine, and antibody titers begin to decline after 6 to 8 months. Therefore, if citizens receive the flu vaccine in the previous flu season, the protective effect may decrease significantly in the next flu season. Meanwhile, due to the different strains of influenza each year, re vaccination is required. "Because influenza vaccines are updated every year, laboratories around the world began collecting the latest influenza virus samples from February of that year, and the work lasted for about half a year. Therefore, the latest version of influenza vaccines cannot be launched until July or August at the earliest."
Yang Laibao provided feedback on the issue of difficulty in booking influenza vaccines in Pudong community, as reported by citizens. "First, make an appointment for vaccination. At present, citizens can carry out online appointment services through the Shanghai Health Cloud, the Disease Control U Health WeChat official account, etc., and vaccinate according to the appointment date. At the same time, community health service centers make on-site appointments and keep numbers on site, and provide offline services for those who cannot operate online appointments. Second, provide convenient services. To meet the peak demand for influenza vaccination and provide convenience for students, office workers and other people, the District Health Committee has uniformly arranged community vaccination clinics from the end of September to the end of October, adding half day weekend outpatient hours. At the same time, some community vaccination clinics with large vaccination volumes have arranged special services for the time period."
It is reported that currently, each community in Pudong New Area has received approximately 60000 doses of influenza vaccines in outpatient clinics, and there has been no phenomenon of vaccine discontinuation; To ensure vaccine supply, a second batch of 55000 influenza vaccines has been scheduled and will be delivered to various community health service centers next week. The vaccine supply cycle can be completed within a week at the earliest, ensuring sufficient supply.
Key populations need to pay attention to contraindications for vaccination
According to the World Health Organization, influenza causes 3 to 5 million critically ill patients and 290000 to 650000 respiratory disease-related deaths worldwide each year. Although the population is generally susceptible to influenza virus, there are significant differences among age groups, with children having a higher incidence than adults; Compared to healthy individuals of the same age, patients with chronic underlying diseases are more likely to develop into severe illness after being infected with influenza. Therefore, for groups with lower resistance such as children and the elderly at home, it is recommended to get vaccinated against influenza in advance to provide protection for the entire family.
The Technical Guidelines for Influenza Vaccination in China suggest that all individuals aged ≥ 6 months and without contraindications for vaccination should receive influenza vaccines. Priority recommendations include timely vaccination for key and high-risk populations such as healthcare workers, elderly people aged 60 and above, individuals with one or more chronic diseases, children aged 6 to 59 months and their family members and caregivers.
For the key group of children, some parents have also proposed suggestions: Is it possible for the community health service center to connect with primary and secondary schools in the area to collectively enter the campus for vaccination in the autumn and winter seasons each year? Yang Laibao said that currently, non immunization vaccines are mainly administered in outpatient clinics, and he has not received any notification of collective vaccination on campus during the autumn and winter seasons.
The reporter also inquired with industry experts about the feasibility, and the experts replied that such vaccination on campus belongs to group vaccination, and there is currently no plan, and approval from the district health committee is required. In addition, if the child belongs to the contraindicated population for influenza vaccination or has allergic rash, vaccination should also be temporarily postponed without worrying too much about timeliness.
