The report of the 11th Council Work Conference shows that in the past four years, the Shanghai lawyer industry has generally continued to develop steadily with progress and improvement. The number of law firms in the city has increased from 1605 at the end of 2018 to 1845, an increase of 14.95%. Among them, there are 1388 general partnerships, 95 special general partnerships, and 362 individual partnerships. The number of lawyers increased from 25384 at the end of 2018 to 38348, an increase of 51.07%. Lawyers in this city handled 1.566 million litigation cases and 613000 non litigation cases.
Over the past four years, the Shanghai Lawyers Association has accelerated the construction of independent brands while promoting the healthy development of small and medium-sized law firms. It has led the cultivation of a group of local comprehensive law firms with high brand awareness and strong professional service capabilities, forming a leading array of Shanghai branded law firms. These law firms have seen substantial growth in terms of the number of lawyers, annual business revenue, per capita income of lawyers, and branch offices or branches. Meanwhile, the scale effect of law firms has further emerged, with the top 20 law firms accounting for 45% of the total revenue generated by the Shanghai legal industry, and the top 10% law firms accounting for 81% of the total revenue generated by the Shanghai legal industry.
In the past four years, the pace of Shanghai law firms' "going out" and "bringing in" has become increasingly steady, with clear national and global layout trends and significant results. As of now, Shanghai law firms have 483 branches in other provinces and cities, an increase of 154.21% compared to 2018; Shanghai law firms have 29 branches overseas, an increase of 383.33% compared to 2018; There are 185 branches established by law enforcement agencies in other provinces and cities in Shanghai, an increase of 35.04% compared to 2018.
