The 2023 Shanghai Urban Space Art Season Huangpu Exhibition Area has kicked off, focusing on "sustainability" among thousands of lanterns
On September 22, 2023, the Huangpu Exhibition Area of the Shanghai Urban Space Art Season kicked off at the Bund Source by the Suzhou River. The exciting display and series of activities will continue until the end of November. The Huangpu Exhibition Area of the Art Season focuses on the theme of "Ten Thousand Lanterns: Sustainability in an Ordinary World". Through low-carbon lifestyle demonstration sample exhibition areas, art installations, exhibitions, and activities, it promotes environmental protection concepts and calls on citizens to pay attention to sustainable lifestyles, making Shanghai a low-carbon, green, and sustainable "city without waste" and a resilient ecological city.
On site, an environmentally friendly lifestyle show was created by the School of Design and Creativity at Tongji University, Shanghai Tongji Huangpu Design and Creativity High School, Huoshixing Fashion, and fashion design enthusiasts and primary and secondary school students from universities in the Yangtze River Delta, presenting a new trend of urban environmental protection. The exhibits of the Environmental Life Show originated from the Old Clothes Fashion Workshop, where teachers and students cleverly utilized waste clothing, recycled materials, and accessories, meticulously designed and handcrafted. Each piece of discarded clothing and fabric was turned into treasure, becoming a creative wearable fashion. At the opening ceremony, students wore these handmade old clothes and carried out a wonderful runway show and effect display.
The exhibition area also hosted the "Growing Green" sustainable creative design exhibition, which uses decayed wood, coffee grounds, old clothing, and waste paper as materials and design inspiration. Through the use of organic and recyclable materials to achieve biodegradation, "sustainable utilization", and "organic prosperity", it outlines an interconnected and growing planetary system, expressing the relationship between design and humanity, nature, current life, and sustainable future. In addition, there are also low-carbon regeneration demonstration art exhibitions and "zero waste city" theme demonstration exhibitions, which showcase intelligent, professional, interesting, and highly informative "zero waste knowledge", vividly demonstrating the practical application of zero waste technology, exploring its technological power and future prospects.

The Huangpu exhibition area of the 2023 Shanghai Urban Space Art Season will be concentrated in the Bund Street and Bansongyuan Road Street. Multiple art installations and venues will be set up for display, and a variety of themed activities will be held to allow citizens to participate and explore the future of green environmental protection and sustainable development together.
Among them, the landmark art installation "Wanjia Lantern · Ecological Light" is located at the source of the Bund, made of recycled metal materials welded from buildings. The lampshade is composed of environmentally friendly 3D printed coffee grounds, and the artistic texture on the surface of the lampshade adopts abstract sustainable chemical symbols - CO2, O2, H2O - the overlapping design of three elements, symbolizing the interweaving of dreams and time, showcasing the beautiful blooming of sustainable development. Another landmark art installation, "Ten Thousand Family Lamps · Inheritance", is in the form of Huangpu intangible cultural heritage Shanghai style knitting technology, and is made of recycled steel. It presents a burgeoning magnolia lamp. The design incorporates the water pattern element of "one river, one river" and the structural characteristics of Garden Bridge of Shanghai, showing the unique culture and urban landscape of Shanghai. Zhong Lv, the chief curator of the art season, said, "Thousands of families have lit up their lamps, illuminating every corner of the world. We call for beauty through action, continue life through environmental protection, and make our community a home full of light and hope."
The Huangpu exhibition area will also showcase a series of "City Treasure Boxes" - low-carbon living demonstration sample exhibition areas, including the Zero Distance Home of Shanbei Community, Pocket Garden along Henan Road, Journey to Xilingjiazhai Road Cultural Block, Shanghai World Expo City Best Practice Area, etc. Each area showcases different low-carbon lifestyles and innovative practices, allowing citizens to experience the charm of sustainable life firsthand and create beautiful habitats together with nature.

For example, in the Shanbei community of the Bund Street, by improving infrastructure, optimizing business formats, planting themed pocket gardens, and combining with surrounding green roofs, a low-carbon and sustainable block and an all age friendly community are created to enhance the happiness index of residents. Starting from the banks of Suzhou River, citizens can walk through the Shanbei community, explore the upcoming pocket gardens along Henan Middle Road, and co create insect hotels in the "Cloud Hill" garden. They can transform garden waste materials into habitats favored by insects and experience the pleasure of intimate contact with nature. In Bansongyuan Road Street, citizens can stroll along Xiling Family Mansion Road and explore the bustling Shanghai style arcade street. The Xiling Family Mansion Road carries rich historical and cultural heritage, while also incorporating the urban pulse of modern life. Four pocket parks have been added along the road, allowing urban fireworks to collide with natural art and presenting a unique Shanghai style atmosphere. The renovated Xiling Family Mansion Road will take on a brand new look of "Drunk Beauty, Gathering Joy in Xiling", presenting a different atmosphere of fireworks.
The Huangpu exhibition area also features exciting activities such as "Resilient City" day reading, "Everyone Artist", "Green and Sustainable" running along the Huangpu Riverside, and "Expo Songyuan" Tomorrow Street. Citizens can express their understanding and love for "low-carbon life" and understand the development process and cultural dimensions of the city by participating in activities such as low-carbon life lectures, environmental knowledge competitions, art and handicraft creations, public welfare and sustainable markets, and clean actions.
The 2023 Shanghai Urban Space Art Season Huangpu Exhibition Area is hosted by the Huangpu District People's Government, jointly organized by the Huangpu District Planning and Natural Resources Bureau, the Bund Street, and the Bansongyuan Road Street. The Shanghai Municipal Planning and Natural Resources Bureau provides strong guidance, and extensively solicits opinions and suggestions from citizens, experts, and departments on the planning of the exhibition area during the event planning process.
