Xing Shaoyun, winner of the 49th Nightingale Prize: Treating leprosy patients as his own family members
CCTV News: Today's series of reports on the 49th Nightingale Award winners, let's get to know Xing Shaoyun, the head nurse of the Skin Rehabilitation Department at the Fifth People's Hospital of Hainan Province. Over the past 28 years of working in nursing, Xing Shaoyun has regarded leprosy patients as his own family members and provided medical care to them with care and dedication. She not only promotes to everyone that leprosy can be prevented and controlled, but also explores an effective method for caring for the sequelae of leprosy, making contributions to the prevention and treatment of leprosy in China.
At 8 o'clock in the morning, in the leprosy rehabilitation area of the Fifth People's Hospital of Hainan Province, the reporter met Xing Shaoyun and her nursing team who were administering medication to rehabilitation patients. At present, leprosy in Hainan Province has been basically eliminated, but serious sequelae can cause erosion of the patient's limbs and require careful care.

Due to the fact that the average age of rehabilitation patients living here is relatively old, in addition to receiving normal care, Xing Shaoyun would hold their hands and chat for a while every time he went to a ward. The elderly also seemed particularly happy to see Xing Shaoyun's arrival.
In 1995, at the age of 20, Xing Shaoyun graduated from Hainan Provincial Health School and was assigned to work in the leprosy ward of Hainan Provincial Dermatology Hospital for 28 years. Xing Shaoyun told us that in clinical practice, if a patient suffers from leprosy, after standardized treatment and cure, it is no longer contagious. But in the past, many people still lacked scientific understanding of this. In order to eliminate everyone's fear of leprosy patients, Xing Shaoyun took off his protective clothing in clinical nursing and provided zero distance treatment for rehabilitation patients. He held hands with them and talked about daily life, promoting the prevention and control of leprosy through his own actions.
Xing Shaoyun, winner of the 49th Nightingale Prize: Leprosy is preventable, controllable, and not scary. With a completely new understanding of the system, I want to use my behavior to influence more people and break the traditional leprosy prevention and control model.

Faced with leprosy ulcers caused by the sequelae of leprosy, and even a high amputation rate, Xing Shaoyun took the initiative to study wound treatment knowledge in departments of hospitals such as burns and trauma both inside and outside the province. He explored and summarized an effective nursing method for leprosy ulcers, alleviating the patient's pain, improving the healing rate of wounds, and reducing the amputation rate of leprosy foot ulcers. In her 28 years of work, Xing Shaoyun had several opportunities to be transferred to other hospitals, but years of interaction have made patients here treat her as family. Faced with everyone's sincere expectations, Xing Shaoyun chose to stay.
Over the years, Xing Shaoyun and his nursing team have visited leprosy hospitals and villages at the grassroots level multiple times for rehabilitation guidance and lectures, improving the service skills of grassroots medical staff, and conducting "leprosy disability prevention and rehabilitation training". This not only changed the leprosy prevention and treatment model in Hainan, but also trained and delivered a group of professional clinical leprosy nursing backbone for Hainan.
Xing Shaoyun, winner of the 49th Nightingale Awards: We have always been practicing the spirit of Nightingale. Awards are not only a reward for us, but also an encouragement and motivation, as well as a motivation. I feel that the responsibility on our shoulders is even greater for the recognition of our nursing work in Hainan. The Nightingale spirit emphasizes a spirit of dedication, humanity, and universal love, hoping to influence more medical staff with our outlook on life and values.
