How to help the injured recover better and faster? Tongji Hospital launched the first "trauma nutrition joint ward round" in Shanghai
Emergency trauma patients are often in a state of high catabolism due to trauma, stress, and inflammation, leading to increased energy consumption. At the same time, emergency trauma patients may be accompanied by complex problems such as impaired intestinal barrier function, immune dysfunction, imbalance of gut microbiota, constipation, etc., which can lead to delayed wound healing, muscle atrophy, increased infection, and dependence on ventilators, making the treatment of trauma more complex and challenging. Therefore, early nutritional intervention and rational nutritional treatment plans are particularly important for emergency trauma patients. Scientific nutrition, appropriate nutritional support pathways, and reasonable energy and protein supply can help trauma patients maintain important organ functions, improve treatment success rates, and promote rapid recovery. Recently, led by Wu Ping, the director of the Nutrition Department of Tongji Hospital in Shanghai, the first "trauma nutrition joint ward round" in Shanghai was conducted in the emergency trauma treatment center ward.
During the examination, Li Jun, the deputy chief physician of the Emergency Trauma Treatment Center, provided a detailed introduction to the disease status, surgical and medication use, biochemical results of various tests, and current nutritional issues faced by several key patients who had nutritional risks in the early stage. Wu Ping conducted a detailed dietary survey on patients and their families, conducted nutritional screening and evaluation, diagnosed their current nutritional status based on their metabolic status, dietary intake, etc., and developed a detailed personalized nutritional treatment plan.
Trauma patient Xiao Li expressed appreciation and welcome for this combined ward round model after being surprised. "This one-on-one nutritional therapy can help me accelerate my post-traumatic recovery. In future treatments, I will also pay more attention to the professional guidance of nutritionists."
"The disciplines of trauma and nutrition have fully utilized their respective professional advantages, which are of great help in improving patient nutritional status, shortening healing time, and reducing medical costs." Director Wang Tao of the Emergency Trauma Treatment Center also mentioned that the in-depth cooperation between trauma treatment and nutrition in the future will provide more opportunities for the comprehensive diagnosis and treatment and accelerated recovery of emergency trauma patients, and accumulate more valuable experience for building the first "trauma nutrition risk assessment and intervention system" in the country.
It is reported that the service radius of the Emergency Trauma Treatment Center of Tongji Hospital has reached 200 kilometers around the Yangtze River Delta, with a success rate of over 99% for critical trauma rescue; The Nutrition Department is one of the earlier departments in Shanghai to carry out standardized diagnosis and treatment of nutrition. Starting from this joint ward round, both parties will comprehensively launch standardized nutrition management for trauma patients throughout the entire process, including nutrition screening, assessment, diagnosis, intervention, and follow-up monitoring. The nutrition department will conduct daily nutrition consultations, weekly chief nutrition rounds, quarterly discussions on difficult cases, and set up trauma nutrition rehabilitation clinics based on the disease characteristics of emergency trauma patients. The department will provide comprehensive nutrition management for trauma patients from early trauma, perioperative period, post trauma period to discharge follow-up, covering all aspects, processes, and personalization.
