"Spanish Film Masters Exhibition" Appears on Weekend, Specially Planned for Shanghai Film Festival
The "Spanish Film Masters Exhibition", guided by the Shanghai Film Bureau and specially planned by the Shanghai International Film and Television Festival Center, will be held in Shanghai starting this weekend. This time, three works of Spanish masters were screened, and a total of ten films were presented to fans in Shanghai on September 23rd, 24th, and September 28th, 29th, and 30th.

In recent years, through the Shanghai International Film Festival and the Daily Masters Exhibition, Shanghai has screened many annual new films and classic works from Spain. This "Spanish Film Masters Exhibition" focuses on three representative Spanish directors, Carlos Shola, Victor Ellis, and Alejandro Amenawal. Considering the restoration version of the film and combining the situation of Spanish films screened in Shanghai over the past five years, ten feature films and documentaries were selected for screening. The work spans over half a century and covers various themes such as family, war, song and dance, horror, art, etc. Among them, three are the latest restored 4K versions.

In February of this year, Spanish national treasure film director Carlos Shola passed away in Madrid at the age of 91. This master exhibition first presents a selected review of Carlos Shola's creative career spanning over 60 years. Shanghai audiences are not unfamiliar with Shola's films. In 2006, the Shanghai International Film Festival screened Shola's "The Seventh Day"; In 2010, "Flamenco, Flamenco" was screened as the opening film of the Spanish Film Festival at Shanghai Cinema, and Shola himself was also present at the scene; In 2020, a restored version of its most famous "Flamenco Trilogy" was screened at the "Spanish Film Masters Exhibition".
This film exhibition will focus on presenting his early representative works, including the first feature film, the representative of the Spanish new film Little Rogue, the second feature film, Hunting, which won the Best Director Award of the Berlin International Film Festival, and three classic works of Saura's cooperation with Geraldine Chaplin: peppermint Shaved ice, a surrealist masterpiece Cousin Angelica, and the early masterpiece Raising Crows. At the same time, the film festival also took into account Shola's mid - and late works, including "Long Live, Camilla!" which reflects the Spanish Civil War, another brilliant practice of iconic dance film techniques, "Tango Madness," and his last film released during his lifetime, "The Wall Speaks.".

Compared to the prolific production of Shola, the contemporary Victor Ellis is quite low in production, releasing only one film every ten years. His works are beautiful, calm, and full of poetry. His first feature film was introduced at the 2019 Spanish Film Masters Exhibition, and his second work, "The South," was completed in 1983. This year marks his 40th anniversary and was specially included in the selection.

The younger generation, Alejandro Amenawal, took a completely different path. As a representative figure of the new generation of Spanish cinema, he has expanded the boundaries of Spanish cinema in genre films and successfully combined them with Hollywood commercial genre films, with "The Island" being the best case. Recently, the film has been repaired under the supervision of the director, and it was specially selected as a classic thriller at this film festival.
