Women account for 11.11% of academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering in Shanghai! Highlighting the agglomeration effect of high-level female technological talents
At the 2023 Pujiang Innovation Forum, the Shanghai Women's Federation, the Shanghai Science and Technology Work Party Committee, and the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission jointly released the Shanghai Women's Science and Technology Talent Development Report.
The report points out that the proportion of female R&D personnel in Shanghai ranks among the top in the country. In 2021, the total number of female R&D personnel in Shanghai was 98300, accounting for 28.49% of the total R&D personnel in the city. From 2016 to 2021, the growth rate of female R&D personnel was higher than that of all R&D personnel.
From a field perspective, the engineering science and technology field has the highest proportion of female scientific and technological talents, while the medical science field has the highest proportion of women. In natural science research and technology development institutions, the number of female scientific and technological personnel in the field of engineering science and technology in 2021 was 9229, with a relatively large total scale; In terms of the proportion of female science and technology personnel, the medical science field accounts for 61.31%, and the social humanities field accounts for 55.05%.
The report also points out that the agglomeration effect of high-level female technology talents is prominent. The number of female academicians in the two academies has increased significantly. As of July 2023, women accounted for 11.11% of academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering in Shanghai. In 2021, the proportion of newly added female members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shanghai accounted for nearly one-fifth of the total number of newly added female members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Sciences in the country. In the past three years, the proportion of female scientific and technological talents in Shanghai who have received the National Outstanding Youth Fund has remained at 15% -20%. The number and proportion of female winners of science and technology awards are constantly increasing. Shanghai's female scientific and technological talents have repeatedly won the China Young Female Scientist Award. As of 2023, a total of 21 young female scientists in Shanghai have been awarded this honor.
Data statistics show that from 2018 to 2022, women accounted for more than one-third of the four types of talent projects undertaken by the Municipal Science and Technology Commission, including Yangfan, Qimingxing, Pujiang, and Outstanding Academic/Technical Leaders. The Sailing Project aimed at young talents has nearly half of the projects undertaken by women. The number and proportion of projects undertaken by women in various talent programs are showing a continuous growth trend.
In recent years, Shanghai has accelerated the discovery, cultivation, utilization, and incentive mechanisms for female scientific and technological talents. In April 2021, the All China Women's Federation, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the State owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council, the All China Federation of Trade Unions, the Chinese Association for Science and Technology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Chinese Academy of Engineering jointly studied and formulated the Opinions on Implementing the Action of Women in Science and Technology Innovation. In 2021, the Ministry of Science and Technology, together with 12 departments including the All China Women's Federation, printed and issued Several Measures to Support Women's Scientific and Technological Talents to Play a Greater Role in Science and Technology Innovation, constantly promoting and improving the support system for women's scientific and technological talents. In 2021, the Shanghai Science and Technology Work Party Committee, Shanghai Women's Federation, and 17 other departments and units jointly issued a special policy entitled "Several Measures to Support Women's Science and Technology Talents to Play a Greater Role in Building a Science and Technology Innovation Center with Global Influence in Shanghai". The Lingang New Area and Shanghai Jiao Tong University have successively launched and implemented specific measures.
In addition, the Women Scientists Summit of the Pujiang Innovation Forum, the AI Women's Elite Forum of the World Artificial Intelligence Conference, and the "She Forum" of the World Top Scientists Forum have built higher level, more diverse, and broader communication platforms for female scientific and technological talents.
