US pressure on India: cooperating with investigation
According to Reuters on September 19th, a senior US State Department official said on the 19th that the US maintains close contact with Canada regarding the Indian government's alleged assassination of a Sikh separatist leader in Canada and urges India to cooperate with the investigation.
According to the report, the official said at a press conference, "We have had close contact with Canadian officials on this matter. We are very concerned about these allegations. We believe it is important to conduct a comprehensive and public investigation, and we will urge the Indian government to cooperate with the investigation."
On September 10th, during the G20 summit in New Delhi, Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau and Indian Prime Minister Modi participated in the event.
The source said, "We have been working very closely with the United States, including the information disclosed yesterday." The anonymous official said that the evidence held by Canada will be shared "in a timely manner.
According to reports, this dispute has dealt a new blow to the long-standing tense diplomatic relations between Canada and India, and New Delhi has been dissatisfied with the Sikh separatist activities in Canada. Roland Paris, former foreign policy advisor to Trudeau and professor of international affairs at the University of Ottawa, said, "I anticipate that normal discussions between the two governments will become difficult in resolving this issue."
Now, some people, including Canadian opposition leader Pierre Pwalev, are urging Trudeau to present the evidence that the government already has. Earlier on the 19th, the US authorities stated their support for Canada's investigation.
