Tunisia announces: ban on entry of European Parliament delegations
On September 14th local time, the Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement stating that European Parliament delegations have been banned from entering the country after EU lawmakers criticized the agreement reached between the EU and Tunisia aimed at curbing illegal immigration. The delegation of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, consisting of five European parliamentarians, was originally scheduled to conduct an on-site investigation in Tunisia before the 14th.
The European Union signed a memorandum of understanding with Tunisia in July this year aimed at curbing illegal immigration in the Mediterranean. According to the agreement, the European Union promises to provide hundreds of millions of euros in financial support to Tunisia.
Tunisia is located at the northern end of the African continent, facing European countries such as Italy across the sea. In recent years, incidents of illegal immigration to Italy through Tunisia have occurred frequently.
