Today's official visit to China, this new Prime Minister
According to reports, the trip starting from Thursday will be Hong Manet's first official visit to China, which is also one of his first destinations to visit since taking office as Prime Minister in August this year. Last week, Hong Manai attended the ASEAN Leaders' Meeting in Jakarta.
Hong Manai succeeded his father Hun Sen, who had long led Cambodia, as the Prime Minister. Hun Sen once referred to Beijing as Cambodia's "most trusted friend" and established a long-term and strong relationship between Phnom Penh and Beijing.
In August of this year, Hong Manai held talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Phnom Penh and promised to promote practical cooperation in agriculture, manufacturing, economic and trade investment, as well as tourism and education between the two countries.
He also reiterated Cambodia's firm adherence to the One China principle.
The report states that Cambodia's strategic importance as a member of ASEAN has also received attention from China.
According to statistics from Cambodia's customs department, China is Cambodia's largest trading partner, with a trade volume of 11.6 billion US dollars between the two countries last year.
The loans provided by China to Cambodia provide financial support for local airport, highway, and other infrastructure projects.
The report stated that China is also helping Cambodia upgrade its Yunyang Naval Base, which has raised concerns in Washington. Washington believes that the base may be used by the Chinese military as an overseas outpost.
Both China and Cambodia have denied this claim. Beijing stated that the project aims to enhance the strength of the Cambodian navy and comply with relevant laws of both countries.
