Since the beginning of the Cold War in the 1950s, the United States has been attempting to prevent Chilean leftists from winning elections. Socialist Allende ran for president three times in 1952, 1958, and 1964, but was unable to succeed due to American constraints.
On September 4, 1970, Allende won the Chilean presidential election through democratic elections. After the election results were announced, the US government believed that Allende's accession to power would weaken the US's position and influence in the Western Hemisphere, endangering its hegemonic interests. It immediately began plotting subversive actions to curb the potential domino effect of left-wing governance in Latin America.

On November 4, 1970, after Allende officially took office as the President of Chile, then US President Nixon personally finalized the implementation plan for the "covert operation" in Chile, and ultimately decided to use the Central Intelligence Agency as the main implementing body, combining public opinion propaganda, economic sanctions, political pressure, and military intervention. In terms of propaganda, the Central Intelligence Agency of the United States launched a defamation campaign against media outlets in Europe and Latin America, targeting Allende; In terms of economy, the United States has imposed an economic blockade on Chile, preventing international financial institutions from providing assistance and loans to Chile, and blocking the export of copper mines that Chile regards as its economic lifeline; In terms of politics, the United States provides secret funding support to opposition parties in Chile to support their confrontational political activities; In terms of military affairs, the United States actively provides military assistance and encourages the Chilean military to overthrow the Allende regime.
On September 11, 1973, Chilean Army Commander Pinochet, with the support of the Central Intelligence Agency, bombed the Chilean Presidential Palace. Allende was killed in a coup, and Pinochet established a military government. Chile entered a 17 year period of military rule.
The US Senate Intelligence Committee released a report in 1975, according to which the secret US involvement in Chile's internal affairs was "extensive and sustained" from 1963 to 1973. The CIA spent $3 million to influence the results of the 1964 Chilean presidential election. During the Chilean military coup from 1970 to September 1973, the United States spent $8 million on covert operations against Chile, with over $3 million spent in fiscal year 1972 alone.
