The New History Course in Florida, USA, Whitewashing Slavery, Triggering Large scale Protests Against Slavery | Course | Society
On September 14th, according to ABC's report on September 13th, the newly launched African American history course in Florida, USA, has been protested by many local students, parents, and educators for whitewashing slavery and claiming it benefits African Americans.
According to reports, this course for middle school students claims that slavery has some "positive benefits" because "the skills learned by African Americans as slaves can in some cases serve their personal interests.". Florida Governor Ron de Santis also defended this course during his presidential campaign.
In response, Professor Marvin Dunn of Florida International University stated that this statement is despicable, and historically, African Americans were not even recognized as human beings, and personal interests cannot be discussed.
Dunn and other local educators formed a non-profit alliance called the Miami Center for Racial Justice to protest against the new curriculum and call for increased awareness of African Americans in American history. Dunn said that such a change in expression would lead to misunderstandings among students about slavery, revealing the cruelty and injustice of slavery in order to avoid repeating the mistakes of history.
