Sichuan Province Efforts to Protect Germplasm Resources and Innovate Seed Industry, Consolidating a Solid Foundation for Stable and Increased Grain Production
CCTV News: In 2022, the grain planting area in Sichuan Province exceeded 96 million mu, and the grain production exceeded 70 billion kilograms. 2023 marks the beginning of Sichuan's construction of a higher level "Tianfu Granary" in the new era. As a major agricultural province, how can Sichuan focus on current agricultural production and achieve a bountiful annual grain harvest?
At present, Sichuan Province has entered the peak autumn harvest period from south to north.
Sichuan has the Chengdu Plain, and there are also many cultivated lands distributed in hilly and mountainous areas. The quality of cultivated land is relatively poor, and the infrastructure conditions are also relatively weak. How can Sichuan adjust measures to local conditions and improve the utilization rate of existing farmland and grain production?
Wu Xiuqiang, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Sichuan Province: We will mainly start from three aspects. Firstly, we will vigorously carry out the construction of high standard farmland, especially in hilly areas, focusing on farmland transformation, as well as supporting water conservancy projects such as reservoirs, ponds, and channels. Secondly, we have strengthened the control over the use of arable land and launched a special campaign to protect arable land throughout the province, resolutely curbing the "non agriculturalization" and "non grainification" of arable land. Thirdly, we should focus on improving the index of multiple cropping. For example, we will vigorously promote the technology of corn and soybean strip compound planting, improve the utilization rate of farmland, and achieve the goal of not reducing corn production and increasing the income of one season of beans.
Sichuan is a major agricultural and seed industry province. In recent years, Sichuan has made great efforts to improve seed quality.
Wu Xiuqiang, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Sichuan Province: On the one hand, we have highlighted the protection of germplasm resources and innovation in the seed industry, explored and utilized high-quality germplasm resources, and cultivated a large number of high-quality and high-yield crop varieties. On the other hand, we will carry out the selection of "leading varieties" and "leading varieties", as well as the selection of "rice aroma cups" for high-quality rice, widely promote and apply excellent varieties, and consolidate a solid foundation for stable and increased grain production.
Sichuan has entered the autumn rainy season since late August, with continuous overcast rain having a certain impact on agricultural activities and autumn grain harvesting. How can Sichuan respond to building a solid defense line for annual grain production?
Wu Xiuqiang, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Sichuan Province: We will work hard on the "three grabs". One is to "grab" the harvest, seize favorable weather, grab the fast harvest, and at the same time organize and carry out collection assistance and drying services to ensure that all receivables are collected. The second is to "seize" management and implement measures to increase production and strengthen pest and disease prevention and control in the main production area of regenerated rice in southern Sichuan. The third is to "compete" for planting, do a good job in adjusting and transporting materials such as detoxified autumn potato seeds and fertilizers, increase planting and interplanting, expand planting area, and build the last line of defense for annual grain production.
