Sending three signals to the world, the G20 New Delhi Summit concludes in New Delhi, India | Global | Summit
The 18th summit of G20 leaders concluded on the 10th local time in New Delhi, India. The summit invites the African Union to become a formal member and adopts the Declaration of the New Delhi Summit of G20 Leaders.
Observers point out that against the backdrop of the enormous challenges facing global economic recovery and sustainable development, the holding of this summit sends three signals to the outside world.
Firstly, humanity is increasingly becoming a community with a shared future.
The theme of this summit is "One Earth, One Home, One Future".
Chinese Premier Li Qiang clarified China's position in his speech at the first stage of the summit, emphasizing once again the construction of a community with a shared future for mankind. He pointed out that, especially in recent years, the world we live in has undergone significant changes due to the interweaving and overlapping effects of the century long changes and the pandemic. The most important lesson these changes bring us is that humanity shares a common destiny. In the face of major crises and common challenges, no one can stand alone. Only through unity and cooperation is the right path for humanity.
Liu Qing, Vice President of the China Academy of International Studies, pointed out that the theme of the New Delhi Summit reflects everyone's consensus in the current international situation, that everyone is on the same boat and should unite and cooperate to solve global crises. This coincides with China's long-standing advocacy of building a community with a shared future for mankind.
China issued a call at the summit that all countries should respect each other, seek common ground while reserving differences, peacefully coexist, and work together to address global challenges and create a better future.
The declaration passed at the summit also reflects this spirit. For example, it is mentioned that taking practical actions to address global challenges; Do not let anyone fall behind; Strive to build a system that can better assist countries in addressing global challenges, prioritize people, and bring prosperity and well-being to humanity.
Liu Qing said that regardless of the differences in national conditions and political systems among G20 member countries, after a century of changes and the pandemic, most countries have realized that humanity is increasingly becoming a community with a shared future.
Secondly, the accelerated rise of the "global south" has become a new trend.
At this summit, members of the G20 reached an agreement to invite the African Union to become an official member, which is seen as a major achievement of the New Delhi summit, demonstrating the accelerated rise of the "global south" as a new trend on the international stage.
Currently, with the increasing balance of international power and global challenges, strengthening global governance and promoting the transformation of the global governance system have become the trend. Among them, the most prominent is to enhance the representation and voice of developing countries in global governance.
At the 15th meeting of BRICS leaders held in August this year, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates were invited to join the BRICS cooperation mechanism, and the BRICS achieved expansion. The outside world claims that this echoes the general will of developing countries and reflects the historical trend of the rise of the "global south".
"The accession of the African Union to the G20 undoubtedly reflects once again the historical trend of the rise of the 'global south'." Xu Liping, Director of the Southeast Asian Research Center of the Asia Pacific and Global Strategy Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, pointed out that this will increase the representativeness of the G20, more reflect the voices and demands of developing countries, and more contribute to the effectiveness and comprehensiveness of global governance, so that the G20 can better respond to global crises.
China has always been committed to enhancing the representation and voice of developing countries in global governance. It is known that China is the first country to explicitly support the African Union's accession to the G20. Senegal's President Saleh expressed that China is a loyal and steadfast friend of African countries, and thanked China for being the first to publicly support the African Union's accession to the G20 initiative.
"China has always adhered to the policy concept of genuine, friendly, and sincere towards Africa, as well as the correct concept of righteousness and benefit." Liu Qing pointed out that China is not only genuinely helping African countries develop, but also helping them expand their global influence, especially in global governance. "China has always called for and done so."
Thirdly, overcoming differences, the G20 still demonstrates unity.
"Faced with the most noise, the situation is the most complex, and it may not be possible to pass the summit declaration for the first time... Previously, there were many voices in the world who were not optimistic about the G20 New Delhi summit.". Especially in the context of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, it is not easy to bridge the differences between the parties on this issue.
However, the summit ultimately passed a declaration, showcasing the unity of the G20 to the outside world.
The declaration reaffirmed that the G20 is the main forum for international economic cooperation and "recognizes that the G20 is not a platform for addressing geopolitical and security issues.". In terms of the highly anticipated crisis in Ukraine, the declaration states that there are different views and assessments of the situation among all parties, emphasizing that all countries must act in a manner that fully complies with the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter.
Some British media commented that the declaration became a "blow to Western countries". The report points out that Western countries have been trying to persuade developing countries to condemn Moscow and support Ukraine in the past year.
"The signal conveyed to the outside world is very clear. Only by uniting and overcoming differences can we truly face challenges, which is everyone's voice." Xu Liping pointed out that if everyone gets into disputes and excessively amplifies their own interests, it is not conducive to global governance.
Liu Qing pointed out that the achievement of the declaration demonstrates that the G20 has overcome differences through unity, and major economies around the world still choose to seek common ground while reserving differences, jointly address challenges, and work together towards global governance. "This is not only beneficial for oneself, but also for the world as a whole."
As stated in the final declaration of the summit, the leaders of the G20 are determined to lead the world in overcoming current challenges and building a safer, stronger, resilient, inclusive, and healthier future for the people and the planet.
