The floating houses in Guazhou Ancient Town, Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, photographed in 1986. It is said that Guazhou was originally a sand dune by the Yangtze River. Later, it accumulated and became larger and larger, and its shape resembled the Chinese character "瓜", hence the name Guazhou. After the construction of the Grand Canal, the river water flowed into the Yangtze River from here. This place became the throat connecting the north and the south.
In September 2013, an ancient wooden ship was found buried 4 meters below the ground in a ditch washed out by heavy rain in the Luohe River beach in Shouyangshan Town, Luoyang, Henan. The location of the shipwreck is less than 50 meters away from the current Luohe River channel. The widest part of the ship is 3.2 meters and the total length is about 17 meters. According to historical records, the location of the shipwreck is exactly the old course of the Grand Canal of the Sui and Tang Dynasties.
