Pudong Maternal and Child Health Hospital provides emergency assistance to ensure the safety of the mother and daughter. Pregnant women experience significant bleeding before delivery
Recently, Ms. Zhao, 33 years old this year, successfully gave birth to her second child, but recalling the process of this delivery, she still has lingering palpitations.
During the prenatal examination at the Maternal and Child Health Hospital in Pudong New Area, Ms. Zhao was diagnosed with central placenta previa. On the noon of September 12th, she, who was 36+2 weeks pregnant, suddenly experienced a large amount of vaginal bleeding at home. She immediately called 120 ambulance to be urgently transported to the emergency department of the New District Maternal and Child Health Hospital. The hospital's obstetrics team immediately responded and waited in front of the emergency room. Upon receiving the pregnant woman, they immediately activated the emergency cesarean section green channel: opening the vein, laboratory examination, blood preparation and transfusion, and a series of preoperative preparations. The chief obstetrician Zhang Zhiping promptly performed the cesarean section surgery for the pregnant woman, Ms. Zhao, and successfully delivered a female baby.
Ms. Zhao, who was in postpartum recovery, told reporters that her first pregnancy was a cesarean section, and after the second pregnancy was found to have central placenta previa during prenatal examination, Zhang Zhiping informed her and her family about the cause of central placenta previa, the risk of bleeding, and the treatment in case of bleeding. "The doctor reminded me that my wife should avoid strenuous exercise. The original plan was based on a comprehensive evaluation, and she would be hospitalized for delivery after 2 days until 37 weeks. Unexpectedly, there was massive bleeding, so we immediately called for an ambulance at 120. After arriving at the hospital, the medical staff quickly and proficiently treated the patient, as well as Director Zhang Zhiping's superb surgical operation, which ensured the safety of the mother and daughter. We are truly grateful to them from the bottom of our hearts," said Ms. Zhao's husband.
What exactly is central placenta previa? Zhang Zhiping introduced to reporters that under normal circumstances, the fetal placenta is located on the anterior, lateral, or posterior wall of the uterine body. If the placenta is attached to the lower segment or edge of the uterus, reaching or covering the cervical opening, it is called "placenta previa". The complete coverage of the cervical opening by placental tissue is called "central placenta previa" or "complete placenta previa.".
"Most cases of placenta previa have certain high-risk factors, especially central placenta previa, such as a history of multiple miscarriages, uterine procedures, postpartum infections, advanced age, history of cesarean section, and multiple pregnancies." Dr. Zhang Zhiping explained. Placenta previa can cause unexplained and painless vaginal bleeding, especially central placenta previa, which can result in a large amount of vaginal bleeding. If not handled in a timely manner, it can lead to hemorrhagic shock in pregnant women, fetal distress, neonatal asphyxia, and even hypoxia death.

Doctors remind pregnant women to go to the hospital for regular prenatal check ups on time during pregnancy, which poses higher challenges for medical staff. It is necessary to strengthen emergency drills and improve professional skills in order to better ensure the safety of mother and baby.
