In the golden September, on the banks of the Yongjiang River, the green city of Nanning welcomes guests from all directions. The 20th China ASEAN Expo and China ASEAN Business and Investment Summit were held here from September 16th to 19th. The theme of this year's East China Expo is "building a home together, a destiny and a future together - promoting high-quality development of the the Belt and Road and building an economic growth center". High standard delegations from China and ASEAN countries jointly participated in the grand event, signing 470 investment cooperation projects with a total investment of RMB 487.3 billion. The number of projects and total investment reached new highs in history.
Relying on the platform of the East China Expo and the Investment Summit, China and ASEAN continue to enhance mutual trust, increase consensus, deepen and implement all-round cooperation, open up at a high level to a wide range, and write a beautiful chapter of regional economic integration and jointly build the "the Belt and Road".
Efficient and pragmatic, building a broad platform for economic and trade cooperation
Walking into the Malaysian National Pavilion with full sense of design, several large, yellow jackfruit are quite attractive. "This is the first Malaysian jackfruit coming to the East China Expo!" The staff warmly introduced that these fresh jackfruit passed through the customs smoothly after strict quarantine in Nanning a week before the opening of the East China Expo, marking that another fruit variety of ASEAN countries has been exported to China.
Durian from the Philippines also made its debut at this year's East China Expo. According to statistics, over the past 20 years since the East China Expo and Investment Summit, 74 types of fruits from 9 ASEAN countries including Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, and Cambodia have been approved to enter the Chinese market. With the help of the platform of the East China Expo, more and more ASEAN country characteristic products are entering the homes of ordinary Chinese people, and Chinese temperate fruits such as red dates and crispy pears are also increasingly favored by ASEAN people. Data shows that the bilateral trade volume between China and ASEAN has increased from over 100 billion US dollars in 2004 to 975.34 billion US dollars in 2022. The two sides have been each other's largest trading partners for three consecutive years, with a cumulative total bilateral investment exceeding 380 billion US dollars.
The total exhibition area of this year's East China Expo is 102000 square meters, with nearly 2000 domestic and foreign enterprises participating, of which more than 30% are from overseas exhibitions. Indonesia bird's nest, Vietnam coffee, Myanmar jade... The exhibition area is crowded with people, and exhibitors look forward to opening up larger markets and gaining more cooperation opportunities through this. Malaysian businessman Huang Guolong has participated in eight sessions of the East China Expo, and through this platform, his durian flavored coffee has entered the markets of China and other ASEAN countries. "The East Expo has established an efficient and pragmatic cooperation platform, and we hope to promote more new products through this," Huang Guolong said happily.
During the East China Expo and Investment Summit, ASEAN countries also held offline national and professional promotion events, such as the Thailand Investment Opportunities Promotion Conference, Cambodia Business Investment and Tourism Promotion Forum, Singapore Night, etc., to build platforms and expand channels for bilateral and multilateral practical cooperation. More than 70 economic and trade activities and 19 high-level forums have provided rich channels for countries to share industrial policies and development situations, and guide enterprises to deepen practical cooperation.
This year's East China Expo also set up an exhibition area called "Guangxi International Sister Cities Entering East China Expo", showcasing characteristic products and advantageous industries from nearly 20 countries and more than 30 sister cities. In addition, East Timor was invited to participate as an ASEAN observer country, bringing traditional East Timor handmade woven fabrics, silver jewelry, coconut oil and other products that attracted many visitors. Wei Chaohui, Secretary General of the Secretariat of the East China Expo, stated that the Expo adheres to promoting high-level opening-up to the outside world, promoting common development and sharing opportunities, and promoting win-win cooperation between China and ASEAN.
Improving quality and upgrading, creating new highlights of innovative green cooperation
This year's East China Expo has set up exhibition areas for intelligent equipment, digital technology, advanced technology, green building materials, and smart homes, focusing on showcasing new highlights of cooperation between China and ASEAN in the fields of science and technology and green industries.
The high-tech products in the advanced technology exhibition area of this year's East China Expo are overwhelming, including the unmanned submersible Wukong, exoskeleton robots, and mobile "spacecraft" residences that can be moved anytime, anywhere. It is understood that there are over 120 exhibitors in the exhibition area, with high-tech enterprises accounting for over 50%. It showcases advanced technologies in fields such as aerospace, sustainable development, and smart agriculture, providing a platform for foreign merchants to understand China's technological development and seek technological cooperation. Thai exhibitor Basong is quite interested in the orchard plant protection robot in the Hainan Province exhibition area: "It can weed, spray pesticides, and also perform data collection and mapping, greatly reducing labor intensity."
In recent years, China and ASEAN countries have achieved fruitful results in high-tech cooperation, continuously creating new growth points for regional economic development. As of now, China has established bilateral technology transfer mechanisms with 9 ASEAN countries, and the technology transfer cooperation network covers 10 ASEAN countries with over 2800 members. At present, the China ASEAN Science and Technology Innovation Enhancement Plan is steadily advancing, increasing regional development momentum through scientific and technological innovation cooperation and promoting sustainable development in the region.
This year's East China Expo also established a digital technology exhibition area for the first time, showcasing the latest achievements in digital economy development such as digital life, smart cities, information technology, and lighting technology. China ASEAN Information Port Co., Ltd. showcased digital products such as the civil servant collaborative office platform and the cross-border trade comprehensive service platform "China ASEAN Business Connect" created by its partner in Laos for the Lao government. It is reported that the company has carried out nearly 20 digital economy cooperation businesses in 9 ASEAN countries.
Green and low-carbon technologies and their applications have attracted much attention at this year's East China Expo. From household energy storage devices to integrated green products for photovoltaic storage and charging, China and ASEAN are accelerating the layout of green industries. Among the signed projects at this year's East China Expo, nearly 40% of the total number and investment in green and low-carbon projects such as offshore wind power, photovoltaic energy storage, and wind and solar hydrogen storage reflect the firm determination of China and ASEAN to jointly promote green economic transformation and sustainable development.
Sharing opportunities and promoting high-quality joint construction of the "the Belt and Road"
Nepalese cashmere, Iranian porcelain, Russian chocolate... The international exhibition area of the "the Belt and Road" is particularly lively at this Expo. The Expo comprehensively upgraded the the Belt and Road international exhibition area. The scale of the exhibition area and the number of exhibitors exceeded that of the previous one. More than 30 enterprises from Pakistan, Poland, Hungary and other countries jointly building the "the Belt and Road" participated in the Expo.
In recent years, based on the cooperation between China and ASEAN, and focusing on sharing cooperation opportunities with countries around the world, the Expo has opened up to other countries jointly building the "the Belt and Road" and even the world. In 2017, the "the Belt and Road" international exhibition area was set up for the first time.
In the "the Belt and Road" international exhibition area, visitors can learn about the fruitful results of China's joint construction of the "the Belt and Road" with ASEAN countries through rich graphic materials, and feel the vitality of the joint construction of the "the Belt and Road". The the Belt and Road Customs Food Safety Cooperation Seminar, Logistics Cooperation Forum and other activities were also held at the Expo and Investment Summit to further promote exchanges and cooperation on the the Belt and Road.
In addition, this year's East China Expo also held the third Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement Economic and Trade Cooperation Business Summit Forum and the first "Institutional Openness: A New Pattern of Regional Economic Development" themed side meeting, helping regional enterprises better grasp the new economic and trade rules and share the dividends brought by the high-quality implementation of RCEP.
