According to a report by the North Korean Central News Agency, the North Korean Olympic Committee delegation led by North Korean Olympic Committee Chairman Kim Il kuo departed from Pyongyang on the 19th local time to participate in the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou. On the 21st Beijing time, members of the North Korean sports delegation arrived at the Asian Games Village in Hangzhou.
Two years ago, the North Korean Olympic Committee refused to participate in the Tokyo Olympics. Subsequently, the official website of the International Olympic Committee announced that due to the unilateral decision of the North Korean Olympic Committee not to participate in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee has decided to suspend the North Korean Olympic Committee's qualification until the end of 2022, and the Executive Board reserves the right to reconsider the suspension period.
The ban on participation will be automatically lifted from 2023, allowing North Korea to return to major international sports venues after a 5-year hiatus after the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games.
According to the official information website of the Hangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee, North Korea has registered 185 athletes in 17 major events for this year's Asian Games, with 74 males and 111 females respectively.
The participating events include archery, competitive gymnastics, synchronized swimming, athletics, basketball, boxing, dragon boat, football, judo, karate, shooting, soft tennis, swimming, table tennis, volleyball, weightlifting, and wrestling. Previously, North Korean athletes had achieved double-digit gold medals in 6 of the 10 Asian Games they participated in.
According to the competition, weightlifting, wrestling, boxing, and shooting are traditional strengths in North Korea. In the shooting event, the North Korean sports delegation won a total of 40 gold medals at the Asian Games. In terms of weightlifting, they have won 22 gold medals in previous Asian Games.
Due to the fact that the football project started before the opening ceremony, personnel from the North Korean sports delegation also arrived in Hangzhou ahead of the main force.
On the morning of September 18th, the teams participating in the F group stage of the men's football team at the Hangzhou Asian Games gradually arrived at the East Sports Stadium of Zhejiang Normal University located in Wucheng District, Jinhua City, to familiarize themselves with the competition venue. 31 coaches and athletes from the North Korean delegation were present. After familiarizing themselves with the court lawn, the whole team also took a group photo of cheering on. Afterwards, in their debut, they defeated the Chinese Taipei team 2-0 and achieved a good start.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the North Korean delegation, along with delegations from Brunei, Cambodia, Palestine, and other countries, attended the welcoming ceremony of the Asian Games Village on September 22. After the welcoming speech and gift exchange between the Chinese side, the North Korean delegation took the stage and shouted cheering slogans, taking a group photo as a souvenir.
