Guangzhou, September 11th (Xinhua) - Marine thermal energy is an important offshore new energy source and an important field of global new energy research. The 20kW ocean floating thermoelectric power generation device, led by the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey of the China Geological Survey, has successfully completed sea trials in the South China Sea and returned to Nansha, Guangzhou. This is the first time in China that the principle verification and engineering operation of ocean thermal energy generation have been achieved under actual sea conditions, effectively promoting the development and utilization of deep-sea energy in China.

Ocean thermal energy is one of the renewable energy sources in the ocean, which refers to the thermal energy formed by the temperature difference between the surface seawater and the deep seawater. It has great development value and potential. Ningbo, a senior engineer at the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey, introduced that China has abundant reserves of ocean thermal energy, but related research was still in the stage of laboratory theoretical research and land experiments.

Ningbo introduced that in order to further carry out research on ocean temperature difference energy, the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey has established a three-dimensional model of water temperature in the South China Sea based on previous basic investigations and research results in the fields of ocean geology, ocean currents, hydrology, etc., and evaluated and selected advantageous sea areas suitable for the development of temperature difference energy in the South China Sea. At the same time, Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey, in conjunction with the National Engineering Research Center for Natural Gas Hydrate Exploration and Development, the Guangdong Provincial Laboratory of Southern Marine Science and Engineering, the Institute of Exploration Technology of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, Beijing Frontier Power Technology Co., Ltd. and other units, independently developed the first set of 20kW marine floating thermoelectric power generation device in China according to the actual sea conditions in the South China Sea.
In August of this year, the ocean thermal energy generation device was carried out for the first time in the 1900 meter deep sea area of the South China Sea on board the "Marine Geology No.2" ship, successfully completing the verification of thermal energy generation technology. Ningbo introduced that the total power generation duration of this experiment is 4 hours and 47 minutes, with a maximum power generation of 16.4 kW and an effective power generation utilization rate of 17.7%.
"This sea trial has verified the feasibility of the independently developed ocean thermoelectric power generation system principle, and also verified the practicality of ocean thermoelectric power generation utilization, marking a crucial step for China's ocean thermoelectric power development and utilization from land testing to offshore engineering application." Ningbo said.
