According to Deutsche Presse-Agentur on September 11, the Minister of Shipping and Island Policy of Greece announced his resignation. According to reports, the Greek Minister of Shipping and Island Policy, Mitiades Vaviziotis, announced his resignation, stating that he hopes justice will be done and that he will take on the responsibility of a politician.
The incident that occurred in the port of Piraeus, Greece last week was captured by surveillance cameras, shocking the whole country. A man jumped onto the loading ramp of the ferry at the last second, as the ferry had already begun to depart from the port. He was late, but there was a boat ticket.
Surveillance footage shows that two crew members attempted to push the 36 year old man back to the dock from the ramp. During the tug, the man fell into the seawater between the tail of the ferry and the port, and was drowned by the strong water generated by the ferry engine.
However, the ferry still set sail and did not return to the port until the port police issued an order. This further aroused public outrage.
This ferry named "Blue Horizon" has been referred to by Greek media as the "ship of shame".
On the night of the incident, the Greek Coast Guard arrested the captain and three crew members. Currently, two crew members have been released. The captain of the ferry and the crew members who reportedly pushed passengers into the water are still being detained. They are expected to face charges of manslaughter and lack of assistance.
