Hangzhou, September 18th (Xinhua) - A golden bamboo ball is adorned with a red lantern, which is thrown up as the actors dance, and the formation changes slowly with the music, sometimes like a bud blooming, and sometimes like waves undulating. A few days later, the Linping Rolling Lantern with a history of over 800 years will appear as a warm-up program at the opening ceremony of the Hangzhou Asian Games.
Linping is located in the northeast of Hangzhou. During the Hangzhou Asian Games and Paralympics, it will host events such as football, volleyball, karate, and blind goal kick. The selection of the Linping Rolling Lantern as a warm-up program for the opening ceremony of the Asian Games is not only to host the competition, but also a tribute from the local people to the Asian Games.
Why did the rolling lamp originate? According to legend, in ancient times, Linping was close to the banks of the Qiantang River, where salt fishing was thriving and pirates often attacked. The public competed in lantern races, showcasing their superb martial arts skills and intimidating pirates. Through the vicissitudes of the sea and the retreat of the land, Linping became the capital of the Southern Song Dynasty. The rolling lanterns also evolved into a folk performance of festival temple fairs, spreading among every household.
Why can a lamp roll up and perform?
It is reported that the rolling lamp composed of 12 bamboo strips is divided into two layers: an outer ball and an inner ball. The inner ball is equipped with a universal bracket that can rotate up, down, left and right. A lit candle is inserted into the bracket, and even if rolled, pressed, or thrown, the candle will not go out.
Rolling lights can be divided into "literary" and "martial". The diameter of the Wendeng is 1.2 meters, and the inner ball is decorated with red silk fabric, making it lightweight; The diameter of the Wudeng is 1.5 meters, and the inner ball is decorated with black silk fabric. The outer ball is wrapped in iron chains with bamboo pieces, so it is also called the Black Heart Lamp, weighing over 100 pounds.
In addition, traditional rolling lanterns include 9 sets of 27 movements, including "Ba Wang Ju Deng", "Jin Hou Xi Tao", and "Xu Ri Dong Sheng". If two hands hold the lamp alternately and one hand quickly swings the lamp around the body, it is called "cross waist wrapping", which requires the performer to have extremely strong physical strength.
With the development of the times, the weight and style of rolling lamps have become more diverse, evolving into small rolling lamps with a diameter of only 35 centimeters, which can be danced by people of all ages and genders. The performance used both large rolling lamps with a diameter of over one meter and handheld small rolling lamps.
The designated music rhythm for the Asian Games is light, bright, and distinct from the soft and soothing rolling lantern repertoire, posing a significant challenge to dance choreography.
As a program director, Tong Yuyuan, the deputy director of the Linping District Cultural Center, recalled that when she first received the task, the choreography team immediately scrutinized and choreographed the movements, busy from 8am until early the next morning. Two days later, the outline of the program was completed.
"After the rehearsal, we found that there were not enough professional dancers, and we also drew strength from various sectors of society, including amateur lantern enthusiasts and students who had never participated in stage performances before." Tong Yuyuan found that many actors' hands were blistered by the bamboo strips on the outer layer of the lantern, but everyone worked hard and hoped to stand on the Asian Games stage in the most beautiful posture.
In fact, as early as the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the Linping Rolling Lantern made a stunning appearance. This time, it is another hand in hand with a sports event.
From deterring enemies to strengthening physical fitness, and then to performing arts and arts, the intention of rolling lanterns in Linping has been endowed with different characteristics by history and times. Today, as a representative of cultural exchange, it has gone abroad and performed in countries such as the United States, Belgium, France, and New Zealand, conveying the beautiful wishes of mutual learning and sharing beauty in the same global village.
"Throwing candles into the air steadily, pushing the ball lightly on the ground." Fan Cheng, a poet of the Southern Song Dynasty, put down a rolling lamp that spans centuries and is about to arrive at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center Stadium. All performers are looking forward to September 23rd, when the rolling lights in their hands can once again bring surprises to everyone.
