Lula: The United States is doing this "illegally"
According to Reuters on September 16th, Brazilian President Lula stated during his first visit to Cuba during his third term that the US embargo on the island nation of Cuba is "illegal". He also condemned the inclusion of Cuba in the list of countries that support terrorism.
Former US President Trump has added Cuba to the US list of countries that support terrorism. Although the Biden administration has cancelled some other measures during the Trump era, Cuba has not yet been removed from the list.
According to reports, during the opening ceremony of the "Group of 77 and China" summit held in Havana, the capital of Cuba, Lula said, "Cuba has always advocated for more equitable global governance. Until today, it is still a victim of illegal economic embargoes. Brazil opposes any unilateral coercive measures. We oppose including Cuba in the list of 'countries that support terrorism'."
Hours after making this statement, Lula set off for New York, where he will attend the United Nations General Assembly and hold bilateral talks with Biden.
The report mentioned that earlier, Cuba expressed concern about its inclusion in the list of "countries supporting terrorism" and the economic embargo imposed by Washington on Cuba. The US embargo on Cuba began during the Cold War and has been ongoing for decades.
The European Union is Cuba's largest trading partner. The EU has also repeatedly opposed trade embargoes against Cuba. Cuba and critics of the economic sanctions against Cuba say that the embargo will prevent and hinder Cuba's access to food, medicine, and other critical development materials.
It is reported that during the United Nations General Assembly, Brazil is expected to return to its traditional stance of condemning the embargo on Cuba. The United Nations General Assembly usually votes annually on a resolution condemning the US embargo on Cuba and overwhelmingly passes the resolution.
