Japan Restarts "Elderly" Nuclear Power Plants!
According to Kyodo News Agency, on the 15th local time, Kansai Electric Power Company of Japan started the reactor of Unit 2 of the Takahama Nuclear Power Plant. This is the 12th nuclear power unit in Japan to be restarted after the Tokyo Electric Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident. Currently, all 7 units of the nuclear power plant have been shut down and restarted.
According to reports, Unit 2 of Gaobin has been in operation since 1975 and entered regular inspections in November 2011. It restarted after about 12 years and has been in operation for 47 years. In Japan, this unit is second only to Takahama Unit 1 in terms of age. Unit 1 was restarted in July 2023 and has been in operation for 48 years. After the Meibin Nuclear Power Plant Unit 3 and Takahama Unit 1, Takahama Unit 2 is the third nuclear power unit to operate for more than 40 years.
According to Guan Dian, Gaobin Unit 2 is expected to start operating on October 16th. Fukui Prefectural Governor Sugimoto Dazhi said, "All nuclear power units that have been shut down have been restarted. Operating companies must be further cautious and work hard for safe operation to gain the trust of the county people in nuclear energy."
According to reports, the Kishida government proposed to maximize the use of nuclear power plants in 2022, and in May 2023, a bill allowing nuclear power plants to operate for more than 60 years was passed. But how to improve the safety of "elderly" nuclear power plants and ensure the continued storage of spent fuel in the nuclear power plant area is a challenge.
