Indian shipyards will repair US warships, both the US and India are optimistic
According to the news website of the American Naval Academy on September 14th, a joint statement released during the G20 New Delhi summit last week stated that India will become the center for maintaining US Navy Indo Pacific assets in the future.
US President Biden and Indian Prime Minister Modi emphasized the Main Ship Maintenance Agreement signed by the US Navy with Mazagang Shipyard in August this year. This is the second agreement signed by the US Navy with Indian shipyards this year - the first agreement was signed in June with Larson Tebolo Limited. These two shipyards are responsible for building some of India's largest and most advanced warships.

The joint statement said that the leaders of the two countries also "welcome further commitments from the US industry to increase investment in India's aircraft maintenance, repair, and comprehensive overhaul capabilities and facilities.".

These agreements are part of a greater effort by the US Navy to search for shipyards to maintain and repair cutting-edge configuration assets in the Indo Pacific region. At present, the US ships that require maintenance can only dock at a limited number of shipyards, and all shipyards are within the range of Chinese military strikes. Although Hawaii and mainland United States have other facilities, they are not easily accessible for ships deployed at the forefront.
Navy Secretary Carlos Deltoro emphasized in his speech in February this year the use of local foreign shipyards to address this issue. There are reports that the US Navy is studying using private Japanese shipyards for maintenance and repair.
