India counterattacks, after Canada takes action
According to Reuters on September 19th, India stated that it has expelled a Canadian diplomat and imposed a 5-day leave on him. Just a few hours ago, Ottawa expelled India's top intelligence officer in Canada and accused him of involvement in the murder of a Sikh separatist leader.
The report states that this is the latest development in the escalating dispute between the two countries. Canada stated on the 18th that it is actively seeking credible allegations linking Indian government agents to the June murder case in British Columbia, Canada.
The Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a statement that the Canadian Ambassador to India has been summoned and informed of the relevant expulsion decision.
The Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs added, "This decision reflects the increasing concern of the Indian government about Canadian diplomats interfering in our country's internal affairs and participating in anti India activities. The relevant diplomats have been required to leave India within the next five days."
On February 23, 2018, Indian Prime Minister Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau attended a press conference in New Delhi.
According to reports, earlier on the 19th, India refuted Canada's accusations, calling them "absurd and premeditated," and urged Canada to take legal action against anti Indian elements operating on its territory.
According to a previous report by the Associated Press, Canada expelled a senior Indian diplomat on the 18th and is currently investigating allegations by Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau that the Indian government may be related to the assassination of a Sikh activist in Canada.

According to reports, Trudeau stated in parliament that Canadian intelligence agencies have been investigating allegations after Sikh leader Hadip Singh Nijar was shot dead on June 18 outside a Sikh cultural center in Surrey, British Columbia.
Trudeau told parliament that he brought up the assassination to Indian Prime Minister Modi at the G20 summit. He said he told Modi that any involvement of the Indian government is unacceptable, and he demanded cooperation from the Indian side in the investigation.
Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Jolly said that the head of India's intelligence agency in Canada has been expelled due to this matter.
Joli said, "If the facts prove this to be true, it would be a serious violation of our sovereignty and the most basic rules of interaction between countries. Therefore, we expelled a senior Indian diplomat."
Trudeau said, "In the past few weeks, Canadian security agencies have been actively pursuing credible allegations that there may be a connection between Indian government agents and the murder of Canadian citizen Hadip Singh Nijar."
He said, "I continue to urge the Indian government to cooperate with Canada and thoroughly investigate this matter in the strongest possible tone."
