India and Brazil have completed a "hammer exchange"
According to Reuters on September 10th, at the closing ceremony of the G20 annual summit held on the 10th, India handed over the rotating presidency of the group to Brazil. The G20 summit will be held in New Delhi this week.
According to reports, Indian Prime Minister Modi handed over the small mallet symbolizing his presidency to Brazilian President Lula, completing the handover.
During the two-day summit, the G20 adopted a declaration committing to issues such as food and energy security, climate change, and global debt vulnerability.
According to Agence France Presse on September 10th, Brazilian President Lula stated on the 10th that "geopolitical issues" should not derail G20 discussions when Brazil takes over the rotating presidency of the G20. This implies the diplomatic dispute surrounding the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
At the conclusion of the G20 annual summit, Lula said, "We cannot let geopolitical issues hijack the G20 discussion agenda. We have no interest in a divided G20. We need peace and cooperation, not conflict."
The report mentioned that G20 leaders have been seriously divided around the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Faced with potential major diplomatic awkward situations, the host India has prompted G20 members to reach a joint declaration, downplaying earlier condemnation of the conflict.
According to the report, the G20 condemned the use of force to seek territory, but did not directly criticize Russia by name.
Amitabh Kant, an important organizer of the summit, said on the 9th that Brazil is one of the countries that has helped reach a compromise on the Ukraine issue.
On September 10th, Reuters reported in another article that Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov stated that the G20 summit in India had been a success. He also said that due to the united stance of "global southern" countries, Russia has successfully managed to keep the G20 agenda uncovered by the Ukraine issue.
