What is oversized luggage? It is reported that oversized luggage with dimensions exceeding 100cm x 60cm x 40cm is classified as oversized luggage, which is further divided into ordinary oversized luggage and special oversized luggage. Ordinary oversized luggage cannot pass through and be placed on the luggage carousel due to weight and size issues, and must be manually handled.
However, oversized luggage has a larger size and cannot be transported through vertical ladders, requiring manual labor throughout the entire process. For the convenience of handling, Hangzhou Airport has set up different transfer routes for two types of oversized luggage.
That day, Chen Lei encountered a pole that was transported from Doha, about 4.8 meters long and weighing about 60 pounds. He needed to work together with another male colleague to carry it.
"Baggage like this will be informed of relevant airport information in advance when it is loaded." Chen Lei explained that after receiving instructions, the sorting staff will hand over oversized luggage at the designated handover point at the airport and transport it to the oversized luggage storage area in the international flight arrival hall. "We all adopt a policy of priority handover and transfer to ensure that athletes pass customs quickly."
Recently, Chen Lei and his colleagues have seen an increase in their workload in handling oversized luggage. "Previously, we had around 3 staff members handling oversized luggage, but during this period, our manpower has increased to 6 to 8 people."
Among the various sports equipment carried by athletes, in addition to the "big guys" such as poles, there are also oversized luggage such as paddles and kayaks, all of which are over 3 meters in length, and the normal check-in process cannot meet the entry requirements.
According to statistics, on September 20th, Hangzhou Airport provided approximately 2600 pieces of luggage related to Asia, of which 250 were oversized luggage, an increase of more than four times compared to usual.
"We have developed a special luggage cart with guardrails to meet the demand for multiple batches and pieces of oversized luggage. It is not only large, but also not easy for luggage to slip off. Currently, Hangzhou Airport is equipped with a total of 8 carts." Dong Jieqiong, the luggage inquiry team leader of the baggage department of Hangzhou Airport Ground Handling Company, told reporters that this special luggage cart is 1.5 meters long and about 1 meter wide. ".
With the assistance of this special luggage cart, it can carry 8-10 large pieces of luggage at once, with a loading capacity nearly three times higher than the original luggage handcart at the airport.
