Further strengthen science popularization and publicity! An immersive experience for mothers and infants, allowing citizens to understand how to ensure the safety of mothers and infants
On September 11th, as one of the organizers of the 5th Shanghai Municipal Hospital Science Popularization Week and Open Day, Shanghai First Maternal and Child Health Hospital held the 5th Hospital Open Day and Science Popularization Week event. Taking the "Painless Delivery" science popularization lecture and simulated delivery pain public welfare experience as the leading activities, more than 20 expectant parents and community resident representatives from Beicai Town and Huamu Street walked into the simulated training center, unveiling the "mysterious veil" of obstetric emergency treatment.
Among numerous critical obstetric conditions, amniotic fluid embolism is the most well-known one. It is caused by a series of serious delivery complications such as acute pulmonary embolism, allergic shock, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and renal failure caused by the sudden entry of amniotic fluid into the maternal blood circulation during delivery. Although the incidence of amniotic fluid embolism is not high, the mortality rate of mothers who experience amniotic fluid embolism is extremely high, reaching over 10-15%, and most deaths occur one hour after the onset of the disease. Amniotic fluid embolism has the characteristics of rapid onset, rapid progression, and poor outcome.
"Call the medical department and production safety office, prepare for the operating room, administer 1 milligram of adrenaline, prepare for intravenous administration..."
At the Simulation Training Center of the East Hospital for Women and Infants, a simulated postpartum woman experienced a heart wrenching moment of amniotic fluid embolism. More than 20 participants in the science popularization activity experienced the atmosphere of treatment on site, and understood how the obstetrics team coordinated anesthesia, surgery, pediatrics, medical care, nursing and other teams to rescue the mother in a timely manner, so as to turn the mother from danger to safety. Through an immersive science popularization perspective that saves lives, understand the process of disease occurrence and treatment.
"Many families may not be aware of the severity of amniotic fluid embolism, especially family members. They may think that giving birth is a normal thing, but there are still many unexpected incidents. During pregnancy, families can provide more support and care to avoid emotional problems as much as possible. I think it is necessary to increase this type of popular science content, so that more families can understand the process of childbirth." Ms. Zhang, a citizen, shared the event's comments.

The World Health Organization evaluates the quality standards of a country's health system based on three main indicators: life expectancy, maternal mortality rate, and neonatal mortality rate. The activity science popularization course introduces that in recent years, the mortality rate of pregnant and postpartum women has been significantly decreasing, and the causes of death have gradually shifted from complications of pregnancy and childbirth to more internal surgical complications, such as maternal heart disease, hypertension, and malignant tumors. At the same time, the improvement of emergency response capabilities for difficult and critical cases in delivery institutions, as well as corresponding national policy guarantees, further contribute to ensuring the safety of mother and baby.
Liu Xiaohua, Chief Physician and Deputy Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Shanghai First Maternal and Child Health Hospital, said, "The management system for pregnant and postpartum women in Shanghai is relatively complete, which includes full cycle management during pregnancy. When critical situations occur during delivery management, there is a reporting system. The hospital has an Obstetrics and Gynecology Safety Office, as well as district and city level women's health centers. If assistance is needed, resources can be mobilized from the entire Shanghai city. In addition, in terms of blood supply, for pregnant and postpartum women with large amounts of bleeding, Shanghai's blood supply can be completed in half an hour, and the Shanghai Blood Center and Maternal and Maternal Health System will prioritize the supply of pregnant and postpartum women."
In addition to the construction of the medical and health system, in recent years, science popularization and family education have also been an indispensable part of the process of "building full life cycle maternal and child safety". Women and infants have been continuously trying to bring in hospital skill training to external science popularization. Dr. Liu Xiaohua added, "Young doctors need to grow, teams need to adapt, and it is not possible to have real examples before exercising. Instead, they need to streamline the process in daily life, and once something happens, they can directly get started. This is internal training. Organizing science popularization activities outside the hospital also aims to increase mutual understanding between us and the public, make communication smoother, ensure the safety of pregnant women and children, and achieve better medical results."
