According to Taiwanese media reports, 20 Taipei and New Taipei citizens gathered in a hiking group on the morning of the 20th to go hiking on the Bafenliao Trail in Ruifang District, New Taipei City. They were attacked by hundreds of tiger headed bees, and 11 people were stung lightly or seriously. Two of them lost their breathing and heartbeat and were sent to hospital for treatment. The New Taipei City Fire Department was reported to go for rescue, and four firefighters were also stung.
According to a photo report, the mountaineering team encountered a swarm attack at around 11:00 am on the Eighth Fenliao Trail on the 20th. Team member Mr. Wang said that starting from the mountaineering entrance at 10:00 am and walking for more than an hour, hundreds of bees suddenly flew towards them. Many people were stung by bees and shouted in pain, and everyone ran away, but there was nowhere to hide.
The fire department received a report and dispatched 20 vehicles and 51 people. They arrived around 12:20 noon, with many people lying on the ground and howling. Ambulance personnel quickly took the injured people down the mountain and sent them to medical treatment for minor injuries. During the rescue process, four firefighters were also stung, but fortunately, after being sent to the hospital for treatment, there were no major injuries.

In the mountaineering group, a 69 year old man surnamed Jiao and a 66 year old man surnamed Hu were seriously injured and were stung by a bee swarm, causing his whole body to turn black. He had to be transported down the mountain on a stretcher. Rescue personnel administered adrenaline to the injured person, initially treating shock symptoms, and established intravenous infusion to replenish body fluids. During the process of transporting down the mountain, two injured individuals suddenly lost their breath and heartbeat, and despite emergency medical treatment, they still struggled to recover.
Yang Shufang, Director of Animal Protection in New Taipei City, said that there were at least a hundred bees at the scene. Due to the dense mountains and forests, as well as the presence of various tree species, it is possible that they are the favorite tree species of the bee colony. In addition, there is a water source that attracts them. At that time, the bee colony was foraging on the trees and was disturbed before scattering and attacking tourists, causing casualties.
The animal protection department said that the hornet likes to suck the strong smelling tree juice and the rotten fruit juice. They will come out in groups to feed in the daytime. Do not wear perfume or cosmetics when climbing the mountain to reduce the odor that attracts the hornet. Stay on the trail as far as possible when climbing the mountain. Do not leave the trail to enter the forest or path, which may easily disturb the hornet.
