Shanghai has topped the global esports capital for the first time
From a city perspective, who can win the "gold medal" of the global esports capital in the competition of esports teams to win the flag? Yesterday, the "2023 Global Esports Capital Evaluation Report" released by Shanghai Jiao Tong University showed that Shanghai, China, where several of the world's top 100 esports clubs are rooted, surpassed Los Angeles, USA, and topped the global esports capital for the first time. This evaluation comprehensively evaluated 20 cities with outstanding esports development worldwide, covering 5 primary indicators and 20 secondary indicators of esports industry ecology, infrastructure, events, clubs, and social influence, and deeply analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of esports development in different cities.
Since the last ranking two years ago, the competition among global esports cities has become increasingly fierce. Professor Xu Jian, Chief Expert of the Institute of Cultural Innovation and Youth Development at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, has added five new cities with potential for esports development, including Shenzhen, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, and Riyadh. They have also added case studies on the construction of the esports capital in Hangzhou and Riyadh. Compared to the first report, the evaluation of the second round of reports covers a wider range of cities and the case analysis is more representative.
The reporter learned that Shanghai, ranked first in the overall ranking, achieved the highest global scores in three indicators: infrastructure, competitions, and clubs. Los Angeles ranks first in social influence indicators, but overall ranks second. Beijing, which ranks first in industrial ecological indicators, surpassed Paris in this ranking and ranked third. Paris, Berlin, and Seoul rank fourth, fifth, and sixth respectively. Singapore ranks seventh with its strong social influence in esports. Seattle and Atlanta in the United States ranked eighth and ninth respectively, while newly selected cities Riyadh and Shenzhen performed well, ranking tenth and eleventh respectively.
Afterwards, Wuhan, Hangzhou, Xi'an, and Chengdu in China ranked 12th to 15th respectively, with Wuhan and Xi'an both ranking one place higher due to improvements in infrastructure scores. Stockholm, Haikou, and Katowice rank 16th, 17th, and 18th respectively. Southeast Asian cities Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta are ranked 19th and 20th due to factors such as infrastructure and club construction effectiveness.
In recent years, the Shanghai Municipal Government has actively implemented policy measures such as "50 cultural and creative projects" and "20 esports projects", providing a good ecosystem for the development of esports enterprises. This not only attracts many well-known domestic and foreign gaming and esports companies to settle in Shanghai, but also supports the rapid growth of local gaming enterprises. To support the implementation of esports activities and strengthen infrastructure support, Shanghai is gradually promoting the construction of professional esports venues, which will also enable Shanghai to undertake more top-level esports events.
At the same time, these venues also carry out esports training, cultural dissemination, commercial operations and other businesses during the breaks of the competition, becoming a new destination for citizens' cultural and entertainment life. The Shanghai municipal and district governments also actively support the introduction of first-class domestic and foreign esports event brands. Several world-class esports events, such as the League of Legends S10 Global Finals and Intel World Open Finals, have been held in Shanghai.
It is worth noting that the evaluation report of the Global Esports Capital includes an analysis of obstacles to the development of esports in various cities, pointing out the main shortcomings that restrict the development of esports in each city. Xu Jian stated that in terms of social influence, eight cities in China still urgently need to improve. In addition, this indicator is also the main obstacle in the development process of the two major esports cities of Shanghai and Hangzhou. As an emerging economic growth point, esports can not only promote the upgrading of digital industries in new first tier cities, but also attract the attention of young people around the world. It plays a good role in spreading urban culture, activating youth communities, and enhancing the international visibility and influence of cities. In response to this issue, he believes that it is necessary to deepen the construction of esports culture, improve public awareness and understanding of esports, and promote the internationalization and high-quality development of China's esports industry. "Core esports cities in the Yangtze River Delta region, such as Hangzhou and Shanghai, should make good use of social media promotion strategies and encourage the public to actively participate in esports activities."

The hurricane disaster in Libya highlights the aftermath of NATO intervention
Hurricane Daniel recently made landfall along the eastern Mediterranean coast of Libya and caused severe flooding. Two dams on the Delna River collapsed at night, and a quarter of the heavily affected city of Delna was destroyed by storms and flash floods, causing significant casualties and tens of thousands of people being displaced.
The humanitarian crisis caused by this "natural disaster" has attracted widespread attention from the international community, while also prompting the world to reconsider the "man-made disaster" left by NATO, led by the United States, in its intervention in Libya's armed forces. After NATO intervention led to the overthrow of the Gaddafi government, Libya fell into a long-term state of division and turmoil, with declining national strength, ineffective governance, outdated infrastructure, and severely weakened disaster prevention, response, and relief capabilities, making it unable to withstand major disaster attacks. The United States and other Western countries bear an inescapable responsibility for today's tragedy in Libya.
