"But it rarely invests in development." Lula: The wealthiest country "invests heavily in military equipment
According to a report on the website of the Spanish daily La Puerta on September 19, Brazilian President Lula pointed out at the 78th United Nations General Assembly that the Russia-Ukraine conflict had proved the "incompetence" of the international community. Lula said, "Without peace, there can be no prosperity, and armed conflict is an insult to humanity."
According to the report, Lula also reviewed the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, Africa, and other parts of the world. He said, "If it cannot be built on dialogue, no solution will be sustainable."
He criticized the wealthiest countries for investing heavily in military equipment but rarely in development, and condemned unilateral sanctions, as they would only cause serious harm to the affected countries.
Lula calls for placing hunger at the center of the global agenda. He said, "Hunger must be a core issue. In this increasingly unequal world, 735 million people sleep tonight without knowing if they can have food tomorrow."
According to Agence France Presse on September 19th, South African President Ramaphosa once again called for diplomatic activities on the Ukrainian issue and condemned the international community's use of billions of dollars for war rather than development.
During his speech at the United Nations General Assembly, Ramaphosa said that it is now time to increase development aid on a "large scale" because the world has not achieved the ambitious goal supported by the United Nations to eliminate extreme poverty by 2030.
He said, "We can invest so much money in war, but we cannot support the actions needed to meet the most basic needs of billions of people. This is a serious complaint to the international community."
Lamafosa said that he talked to Ukrainian President Zelensky in New York about the peace initiatives proposed by African countries.
He said, "As the international community, we must do our best to facilitate meaningful dialogue, just as we should not take any action to escalate conflicts."
According to the report, South Africa, like other developing countries, believes that it is neutral in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and refuses to isolate Moscow.
Agence France Presse also reported that Iranian President Lech accused the United States of intensifying the conflict in Ukraine on the 19th, insisting that Tehran will support a peaceful solution.
He said at the United Nations General Assembly, "The United States is inciting the flames of violence in Ukraine with the aim of weakening European countries. Unfortunately, this is a long-term plan."
Lai Xi said, "We support any initiative to cease hostilities and war."
The Russian Sputnik News Agency reported that Türkiye's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on the 19th that Türkiye would redouble its efforts to seek diplomatic solutions to the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
