Biden may establish the first gun violence prevention office in the United States as he runs for re-election as president
Recently, sources have revealed that US President Biden may announce the establishment of a Gun Violence Prevention Office in the near future. Analysts believe that Biden's announcement of this decision during his campaign for re-election as president is aimed at boosting the voting enthusiasm of major voter groups, including young people.
According to sources, Biden is expected to announce the establishment of the first gun violence prevention office in US history on September 22nd. It is reported that Stephanie Feldman, who has been serving as Biden's assistant for a long time, will play a leadership role in the office. Greg Jackson, Executive Director of the Gun Control Organization's Community Justice Action Fund, and Rob Wilcox, Senior Director of Government Affairs for Bringing Gun Safety to Every Town, are expected to hold important positions in the office.
This news comes as Biden is running for re-election as president. Some analysts believe that at a time when there are ongoing disagreements in the US Congress over the 2024 fiscal year spending bill and the risk of government shutdown is increasing, it is difficult for Biden to push Congress to pass more new bills. However, the Office for the Prevention of Gun Violence will provide Biden with a new opportunity to help boost the voting enthusiasm of major voter groups, including young people.
Since Biden's election as president, gun control organizations in the United States have been calling for the establishment of a gun violence prevention office, believing that this would enable federal agencies to coordinate gun policies and enable President Biden and Vice President Harris to "demonstrate leadership" on gun issues. At the same time, gun control organizations have repeatedly pressured Biden to advance gun control related legislation.
After the shooting incidents in Buffalo, New York and Uwald, Texas, Biden signed the most important gun control law in the United States in 30 years, the Two Party Safer Communities Act, in June 2022. At that time, analysts pointed out that Biden hoped to use the gun to support legislation and improve the declining support rate before the November midterm elections that year. However, due to the failure of the Two Party Safer Communities Act to implement some of the key gun control measures previously proposed by the Democratic Party, such as banning offensive weapons and large capacity magazines, and prohibiting the sale of semi-automatic rifles to citizens under 21 years old, the bill is considered to have limited effectiveness.
According to the latest data from the Gun Violence Archive on September 17th this year, there have been over 500 large-scale shooting incidents in the United States since 2023, resulting in 4 or more injuries or deaths. Previously, there were 689 and 645 large-scale shooting incidents in the United States in 2021 and 2022, respectively. The total number of large-scale shooting incidents in the United States in the first nine months of 2023 has exceeded the data for the entire years of 2018 and 2019.
