"Alzheimer's disease patients in China are showing a trend of increasing younger age."
September 21st is World Alzheimer's Day. With the accelerating process of population aging in China, it has become the country with the highest number of Alzheimer's disease cases in the world.
Alzheimer's disease, as a common neurodegenerative disease in clinical practice, brings a heavy mental and economic burden to patients, families, and society. At present, there are approximately 15.07 million dementia patients in the population aged 60 and above in China, of which 9.83 million are Alzheimer's disease patients. On September 20th, the "Alzheimer's Disease Patient Needs Insight Report" was officially released, and the "Recalling the Future - Alzheimer's Disease Patient Needs Roundtable Discussion" was held in Beijing.
The report shows that Alzheimer's disease patients in China are showing a growing trend towards younger age groups

The disease rate is constantly increasing
In June of this year, the General Office of the National Health Commission issued a notice on promoting the prevention and treatment of elderly dementia, deciding to organize the promotion of elderly dementia prevention and treatment nationwide from 2023 to 2025.
Qi Xinjie, the second level inspector of the Department of Aging Health of the National Health Commission, said that with the acceleration of the aging process of the population, the incidence rate of Alzheimer's disease, which is dominated by Alzheimer's disease, has increased year by year, seriously affecting the health and quality of life of the elderly, and bringing a heavy burden to families and society. Qi Xinjie stated that it is necessary to continuously enhance the awareness of elderly dementia prevention and control in the whole society, increase the public's awareness of elderly dementia prevention and control knowledge, establish the concept of proactive management of brain health, improve the early prevention and intervention ability of elderly dementia, and reduce or delay the occurrence of elderly dementia.
Lu Lin, academician of the CAS Member and president of the Sixth Hospital of Peking University, introduced at the meeting that the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease in China is rising, with 5% -6% above 65 years old, 10% at 70 years old and 48% at 90 years old. The global challenge in dealing with Alzheimer's disease is enormous, but currently there is no specific drug for Alzheimer's disease, and prevention is an effective means to combat the disease. Lu Lin mentioned that a healthy lifestyle, appropriate exercise, and sufficient sleep are of great significance for preventing Alzheimer's disease.

Professor Sun Yong'an, Executive Vice Chairman and Secretary General of the Alzheimer's Disease Branch of the China Geriatric Health Association and Chief Physician of the Neurology Department at Peking University First Hospital, stated that although the public has some understanding of Alzheimer's disease, there is generally insufficient awareness of early intervention, which can easily miss the "golden window" of treatment, namely the stage of mild cognitive impairment. Therefore, we advocate for early screening, diagnosis, and intervention to buy more time for delaying and preventing Alzheimer's disease. At the same time, he also called for the introduction of more innovative therapeutic drugs to help solve the related problems faced in clinical practice.
The patients are mainly from the elderly population,
Presenting a trend of youthful growth
Nowadays, Alzheimer's disease has become the fourth serious health killer threatening the elderly, and it is also a new issue that healthy aging and longevity societies must face. In the "Elderly Health Promotion Action" special project of the Healthy China Action, it is required that by 2030, the growth rate of dementia incidence in the elderly population aged 65 and above in China will decrease. The Notice on Promoting the Prevention and Treatment of Elderly Dementia also emphasizes the need to promote popular science knowledge on the prevention and treatment of elderly dementia.
To this end, under the guidance of the Chronic Disease Center of the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the People's Daily Online, People's Health, and the Alzheimer's Disease Branch of the China Geriatric Health Association jointly launched the "2023 Alzheimer's Disease Health Popularization Action" and released the "Insight Report on the Needs of Alzheimer's Disease Patients". This report is based on the real situation of over 1000 Alzheimer's disease patients and their families, focusing on "early detection, early diagnosis, and early intervention", revealing the difficulties faced by patients in early diagnosis and treatment, as well as their expectations for innovative drugs.
The report shows that Alzheimer's disease patients in China are mainly elderly, but there is a growing trend towards younger age groups. The data shows that among the population diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease for the first time, the proportion of people aged between 60 and 79 is the highest, at 62.1%. However, it is worth noting that Alzheimer's disease patients under the age of 60 accounted for 21.3% of the incidence in this survey, which is more than the 5% -10% reported early onset Alzheimer's disease internationally, indicating that Alzheimer's disease is becoming increasingly younger in China. Due to the fact that these affected individuals are still in working age, it is necessary to draw high attention from the whole society, strengthen health education for the entire population, strengthen disease prevention, early screening, and diagnosis.
In addition, the report shows that over 60% of patients in the community have not undergone early cognitive screening, and 12.8% are not aware of the situation of cognitive screening. It can be seen that it is urgent to include the physical examination of elderly residents in the community in the content of brain health. A survey found that patients and their families have a high willingness for early diagnosis, especially focusing on the economic burden and accuracy of screening for Alzheimer's disease. Professor Wang Gang, Vice Chairman of the Alzheimer's Disease Branch of the China Geriatric Health Association and Deputy Director of the Neurology Department of Shanghai Ruijin Hospital, stated in interpreting the report that encouraging and advocating the establishment of a fully layered medical model for Alzheimer's disease, improving early screening rates, can effectively promote the advancement of prevention and treatment, and enable early patients to obtain more efficient diagnosis and treatment plans.
Meanwhile, Wang Gang stated that nearly half of the patients and their families are not satisfied with the existing treatment effects for Alzheimer's disease, and 81.7% of patients and their families will actively inquire with doctors about the use of innovative treatment drugs. It can be seen that how to use effective therapeutic drugs has become one of the most concerned issues for patients and their families.
