72% of sudden incidents in Shanghai G15 Jialiu section rely on AI automatic recognition
One early morning, two small cars collided suddenly on the G15 Jialiu Expressway. Less than half a minute after the accident, the driver had not had time to call the police. The AI system had automatically recognized the accident through video surveillance and pushed rescue instructions to the rescuers' mobile phones. The license plate, accident video, and location information of the accident vehicle are also displayed on the large screen of the high-speed intelligent transportation management platform for management personnel to read.
The G15 Jialiu section is the first expressway in Shanghai to achieve intelligence through renovation and was officially opened on July 30th. Today, a reporter from Jiefang Daily's Shangguan News learned from the urban operation of Tunnel Co., Ltd. that since the opening of the Jialiu Expressway, the speed of emergency response and daily traffic volume have increased by 35% and 49.6% respectively compared to the same period last year. 72% of emergencies have been automatically identified and alarmed through AI systems.
Traditional highway emergency monitoring relies on citizen alarms and central control center video surveillance. In the process of transformation, Jia Liu Expressway "implanted" AI algorithm, millimeter wave radar, laser radar, edge computing and other "equipment", greatly improving the efficiency of discovery and disposal. Huang Bo, the person in charge of the Jialiu Expressway Project Department for Urban Operations of Tunnel Co., Ltd., said that after an emergency occurs, AI can not only automatically identify the type of accident and determine the location of the accident, but also intelligently judge the resources required for rescue and the best rescue path.

Traffic flow and other data can be accurately controlled. When a car drives on the highway, the management center located dozens of kilometers away can control the real-time information of the car's license plate, load, speed, over limit, lane, etc. When the AI system masters the data of all vehicles on the Jialiu Expressway, it can perceive the overall traffic situation, accurately predict the traffic status in the short term, predict the impact of traffic events, and form intelligent high-speed traffic control strategies to effectively reduce or alleviate congestion.
In addition to managing traffic and vehicles, the highway itself is also within the monitoring range. "The road surface and structural conditions of highways can affect driving safety and experience. We use digital means to implement full lifecycle management of highways, ensuring their long-term healthy operation." said Li Zhisheng, the head of the Digital Management Center for Urban Operations of Tunnel Co., Ltd.
The road structure of Jialiu Expressway is equipped with a large number of facilities for health perception monitoring equipment, similar to accessing 24-hour electrocardiograms. From sudden situations such as road surface water and icing, to traditional diseases such as potholes and ruts, independent risk warning can be achieved after exceeding the threshold. By improving the efficiency range of identifying facility defects and diseases, it can "prevent diseases" for highways and transform major repairs into minor repairs during maintenance.

As of August 30th, the total monthly traffic volume of Jialiu Expressway was 4.283 million vehicles, with an average daily traffic volume of 134000 vehicles, an increase of 49.6% compared to the same period last year. This promotes the smooth flow of Shanghai's entry and exit gates and main transportation arteries, helps improve the national and regional comprehensive transportation system, and serves the integrated development strategy of the Yangtze River Delta.
Tunnel Corporation Urban Operations stated that the next step will be to enhance the collaborative system between smart highways and vehicle terminals, replicate and promote cutting-edge operation and maintenance management concepts, and make more high-speed intelligent upgrades and renovations a model demonstration.
