Nor is she a technical secondary school student. If the "genius girl" is not from northern Jiangsu
Overnight, Jiang Ping became the most popular girl on the Chinese Internet.
Jiang Ping's story is as perfect as a fairy tale: a 17-year-old girl from northern Jiangsu who was studying fashion design at a technical secondary school in her hometown was accidentally discovered by her teacher to have a talent for mathematics; then, under the guidance of her teacher, with this talent and great passion for mathematics, she ranked 12th and entered the finals of the International Mathematical Competition alongside contestants from well-known domestic and foreign universities, becoming the only technical secondary school student to qualify.
The "genius girl" has swept the Internet, and doubts about the authenticity of Jiang Ping's grades have also emerged. After experiencing various "deification" incidents in the past, such doubts have become a kind of "stress response" in the Internet public opinion field. But it is also worth noting that in addition to rational discussions and analysis based on academics and professions, two key words have been repeatedly emphasized in the discussion around Jiang Ping: northern Jiangsu and technical secondary school.
Let's assume that if Jiang Ping was not a female technical secondary school student from Lianshui County, Huai'an City, Jiangsu Province, would there be less criticism? In other words, is it just because of the two identity labels of "Subei people" and "technical secondary school students" that Jiang Ping has to endure these doubts?
It doesn't matter where a hero comes from, but it is precisely her origin that has made Jiang Ping the focus of criticism. In fact, one of the main selling points of the event that Jiang Ping participated in is equal participation, with no entry threshold. Looking at the list of 802 finalists announced by the event organizer, most of them are students from famous domestic and foreign universities, but there are also high school students and even junior high school students. For example, the 715th-ranked contestant on the list is from a junior high school in Shaoxing, Zhejiang.
Jiang Ping's identity as a "technical secondary school student" was deliberately emphasized, reflecting that the society has long had limited recognition of vocational education represented by technical secondary schools. Many parents are even prejudiced and do not want their children to go to technical secondary schools and vocational schools, and the appeal of vocational education has always been low. The questioning based on place of origin and academic qualifications is nothing more than the subtext of believing that a technical secondary school, especially a technical secondary school in northern Jiangsu, could not have produced such a mathematical genius. The basis for making such a judgment is most likely derived from a series of long-standing stereotypes about "northern Jiangsu" and "technical secondary schools." And these stereotypes point to the same real problem, that is, the uneven level of development of education.
Balanced development is the directional requirement of public education in my country. Just a few days before Jiang Ping's story went viral on the Internet, the General Office of the Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee and the General Office of the Provincial Government jointly issued the "Implementation Plan for Building a High-quality and Balanced Basic Public Education Service System". The plan proposes to initially establish a high-quality and balanced basic public education service system by 2025, and by 2030, the operating conditions, teaching staff, funding, and governance system of compulsory education schools will meet the needs of a strong education province, and students of school age will enjoy fair and high-quality basic public education services. It is particularly worth mentioning that Jiangsu has made specific plans and arrangements in the plan to address issues such as urban-rural gaps and regional gaps. Article 7 clearly stipulates that developed areas in the province shall not poach outstanding principals and teachers from northern Jiangsu.
It is undeniable that the overall economic development in Jiangsu Province is "high in the south and low in the north". In 2023, although the GDP growth rate of Huai'an City, where Jiang Ping is located, reached 7.8%, tied with Suqian for second place in the province, the absolute amount is still the last among all 13 prefecture-level cities in Jiangsu. The inclusion of "prohibition of poaching" in the policy plan just shows that the gap between southern Jiangsu and northern Jiangsu in the field of education is real.
The formation of stereotypes is not a matter of a day or a night. And it takes a long time to break these stereotypes. There are many good horses, but few good horse trainers. Jiang Ping's appearance in the public opinion field as a "genius girl" just shows that with the joint efforts of the whole society, especially the hard work of a large number of educators, the gap in educational development levels between regions is being narrowed, and the level of vocational education is gradually improving. This also makes it possible for young men and women with extraordinary potential to appear in technical secondary schools in northern Jiangsu instead of being buried.
