Cargo ship attacked by Houthi rebels sinks in Red Sea
Cairo, June 18 (Xinhua) -- The UK's Maritime Trade Operations Office released a report on June 18, confirming that the M/V Mentor cargo ship, which had been attacked by Yemen's Houthi armed forces, had sunk in the Red Sea.
The cargo ship, which flies the Liberian flag and is operated by a Greek company, was attacked on the 12th about 67.7 nautical miles from the main port city of Hodeidah on the Red Sea in Yemen. A small boat loaded with explosives hit the stern of the "Mentor", causing the freighter to be damaged, flooded and lose power. The Houthi armed forces claimed that they had attacked the "Mentor" that day.
Due to the serious damage to the "Mentor" freighter, the crew was forced to abandon the ship on the 14th. On the 18th, the British Navy found wreckage and oil stains at the last reported location of the "Mentor", confirming that the ship had sunk in the waters east of Eritrea.
This is the second time that a cargo ship has been sunk since the Houthis announced their intention to attack shipping routes in the Red Sea and other areas. Previously, the British cargo ship Rubi Mar sank in waters near the Yemeni coast on March 1 after being hit by a Houthi missile.
After the outbreak of a new round of Israeli-Palestinian conflict in October last year, the Houthis used drones and missiles to attack targets in the Red Sea several times. Since January 12 this year, the United States and Britain have launched air strikes on Houthi targets several times, causing casualties. Some countries condemned the actions of the United States and Britain, believing that this was an infringement on Yemen's sovereignty and would exacerbate regional tensions.
