The first flood of 2024 occurred in Xijiang, Pearl River Basin
The Ministry of Water Resources issued a flood situation report. Due to the recent heavy rainfall, the Xijiang River in the Pearl River Basin has seen a significant rise in water levels. At 15:20 on the 15th, the water level at the Wuzhou hydrological station, a control station for the middle reaches of the Xijiang River, rose to the warning level, and the Xijiang River experienced the first flood of 2024.
So far, seven numbered floods have occurred in the Pearl River Basin in 2024, including two in the Beijiang River, three in the Hanjiang River, one in the Dongjiang River and one in the Xijiang River. This is the second time since numbered flood statistics began in 1998 that numbered floods have occurred in the four major rivers in the Pearl River Basin in the same year.
The Ministry of Water Resources held rolling meetings to assess and assess the situation, deployed targeted responses, and actively carried out flood prevention work in the Pearl River Basin. The Pearl River Conservancy Commission of the Ministry of Water Resources coordinated the dispatch of Tianshengqiao Level 1, Longtan, Guangzhao, Baise and other reservoirs in the upper reaches of the Xijiang River to intercept and store 2.2 billion cubic meters of flood water, and made every effort to reduce the flood prevention pressure downstream; it also fine-tuned the Datongxia, Changzhou and other reservoirs to pre-discharge and empty the reservoirs in advance to prepare for flood response.
The relevant person in charge of the Ministry of Water Resources said that they will continue to pay close attention to the development and changes of rainfall, water conditions and flood conditions in the Pearl River Basin, scientifically dispatch the flood control engineering system to intercept floods and reduce peaks, and give full play to the flood control benefits of water conservancy projects. They will urge and guide local governments to strengthen embankment inspections and defenses, ensure the safety of river-related projects under construction, dangerous reservoirs and small and medium-sized reservoirs during the flood season, keep a close eye on areas prone to floods in small and medium-sized rivers and mountain torrents, and do a good job in monitoring, forecasting and early warning.
