This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Beidou Satellite Navigation System project. Nowadays, not only is there a stable and healthy "Chinese coordinate" in space, but the Beidou system is as ubiquitous as water and electricity.
How did Beidou from the horizon come to us? What role does it play in our lives? Recently, "Let's Talk" invited Lin Baojun, chief designer of the Beidou-3 satellite system, to interpret the Beidou around us.
"Beidou is like air, invisible but everywhere"

During the program, Lin Baojun showed a distribution map. There are 31 visible stars of the Beidou system on the map, which is more than the satellites of the other three major navigation systems GPS, GLONASS and Galileo combined. "The more stars that are visible, the faster the positioning and the higher the accuracy."
Although there are so many visible stars, it seems difficult for us to notice them in life. In this regard, Lin Baojun said: "The Beidou system is like the air we breathe. We cannot live without it, but we cannot feel its existence."
The punctual ringing of the alarm clock in the early morning is the precise timing of Beidou and 5G cooperation; the nearest shared bicycle downstairs, the optimal route selected by the commuter bus, and the countdown of the traffic light countdown rely on Beidou’s precise positioning and navigation; and in Beidou satellites also provide precise timing services at all times during the ticket grabbing process for concerts and stock exchange transactions...
In addition, Beidou is also equipped with unique geostationary satellites with an altitude of 36,000 kilometers in the Asia-Pacific region. "These satellites stand high and can see far, and the signals are not easily blocked by skyscrapers in the city. The usability and continuity of navigation will be better than the navigation systems of other countries. Now I feel that the navigation system is becoming more and more useful when driving, and the reason is Here." Lin Baojun explained.
"Beidou Madman" builds Beidou from "not being at the bottom" to surpassing the former hegemon
Lin Baojun has a nickname called "Beidou Madman". "Madman" refers to someone who dares to use new technologies, even technologies that have never been used in the world.
There is an unwritten rule in the aerospace system industry that no more than 30% of new technologies should be used on a spacecraft. However, more than 160 key technologies were used in the development of Beidou-3, with an innovation level of more than 70%. Many of them have never been used in the world. Lin Baojun has implemented all new technologies in the design of Beidou-3.
In his view, new technology does not mean unreliable. If it is combined with mature components and processes, and then thoroughly tested, we can overcome the problem of "you can't learn from it, you can't buy it, and you can't get around it." The hurdles.
In fact, in the early days of Beidou design, the goal everyone set was "not to be at the bottom" - "When the young people in the team are old, Beidou can be comparable to GPS, and this life will not be in vain."
However, the Beidou system, which was founded in 1999, has exceeded its goals and has even surpassed GPS in terms of performance. Lin Baojun proudly commented on his team: "When the first satellite of Beidou-3 was launched, there were 81 people with an average age of 31 years. It took three years and three months to work on GPS-2 to GPS-3, which took 20 years. Everything was done, and it was done.”
In order to improve positioning accuracy, the Beidou system research and development team independently developed a hydrogen atomic clock with higher accuracy based on the rubidium atomic clock. To make the clock work better, they also invented a seamless switching technology. "When the hydrogen atomic clock and the rubidium atomic clock work at the same time, if there is a problem with the hydrogen atomic clock, the rubidium atomic clock can be switched in time. The time is 20 picoseconds, and the user is almost unaware."
