Witness the grandeur of Shanghai in 1949 with a "citywalk"
On May 24, 2024, the "Glorious City of the People's City - Red Archive Documentation Exhibition to Celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Liberation of Shanghai" was launched at the Shanghai Archives.
The exhibition selects multiple groups of landmarks related to the liberation of Shanghai and the construction of the people's city, such as Yuepu-Wusong, Gaoqiao, Nanjing Road, Fangua Lane, and Yangpu Riverside. By digging into red archives related to these landmarks, and with the help of numerous archival documents, pictures, The physical objects and video materials review the magnificent history of the liberation of Shanghai, show the glorious history of Shanghai's construction and development, and show Shanghai's vivid practice of implementing the important concept of the People's City.
In addition to the archives collected by the Shanghai Municipal Archives, this exhibition also brings together red treasures from the People's Liberation Army Archives, the city's district archives, relevant university archives, the Shanghai Audiovisual Archives, and the Shanghai Liberation Memorial Hall. Among them, "Letter written by Huang Bingqian, an underground member of the Communist Party of China, to his parents in prison", "Materials on the meritorious deeds of members of the People's Security Team of the Fuzhou Road Branch of the Shanghai Telecommunications Bureau", "The Kuomintang's Songhu Garrison District Headquarters' Notice on the Explanation of Zhou Baoxun, Yan Gengchu, Jiao Borong, Zheng Xianzhi, More than 30 files, including the tickets Lu Feixun and Huang Bingqian gave to the Penglai Police Station, have been made public for the first time.
On the eve of the opening of the exhibition, the Shanghai Municipal Archives and the Hongkou District Archives organized a Citywalk event called "One River, One River, Witness the Magnificence of Shanghai in 1949". Visit the Postal Building, Shanghai Tower, Customs Building, People’s Heroes Memorial Tower and other urban architectural landscapes. These urban landmarks are closely related to the process of Shanghai's liberation campaign, and also bear witness to the construction and development process of Shanghai's "Glorious People's City" in the 75 years since its liberation.
During the battle to liberate Shanghai in 1949, the Shanghai Postal Building was the scene of fierce fighting. To this day, there is still a bullet hole left in the glass window of Conference Room 332 of the Shanghai Post Building. The thrilling experience of 72 years ago is solidified through this "unrepaired" bullet hole.
The route of this event starts from the south side of Sichuan Road Bridge and goes south along the north bank of Suzhou River, passing by the Post Office Building, Shanghai Tower and Waibaidu Bridge, and then to the Bund. Take the Spring and Autumn Group's "Red Line" double-decker bus and pass by the Bank of China Building. , Customs Building, arrived at Huangpu Park, and finally ended the trip at the Shanghai People’s Heroes Memorial Tower.
Along the way, the staff of the Municipal Archives Bureau introduced groups of simulations of archives in the collection, introduced an overview of the general offensive stage of the Battle of Shanghai, and described the fighting conditions along the Suzhou River and the Bund area in the past.
