Sudden! Syrian military officer killed in bombing
According to a report by AFP in Damascus on May 25, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights stated that a Syrian military officer who cooperated with the Lebanese Hezbollah was killed by an explosive device in his car in Damascus on the 25th. A Syrian state media outlet also said one person was dead, but did not identify him.
"A Syrian military officer working closely with Hezbollah was killed by an explosive device in his car in Damascus," Rami Abdel Rahmi, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, who has extensive information in Syria, was quoted as saying. The source said the officer was responsible for recruiting Syrian fighters to Hezbollah.
Syria's official SNA news agency quoted a police official as saying that one person was killed "in an explosive blast in his car in the Mezai district." However, SNA did not provide further details.
According to reports, the explosion occurred in the area where the Iranian embassy and consulate are located, which was attacked by Israel on April 1. The bombing comes at a time of heightened regional tensions, as Israel and Hamas are engaged in fierce fighting in the Gaza Strip.
Since the war broke out on October 7 last year, Hezbollah has targeted Israel in support of its ally Hamas. The Israeli army has also taken increasingly deep strikes into Lebanon, mainly targeting pro-Iranian groups such as Hezbollah.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also stated that two Hezbollah members were killed in what was believed to be an Israeli air strike in central Syria on the 25th.
