China and the United States hold talks on climate issues: Both sides will carry out relevant technical cooperation
From May 8th to 9th, the China-US “Working Group on Strengthening Climate Action in the 2120s” meeting was held in Washington, DC, the United States. The meeting was co-chaired by China's Special Envoy for Climate Change Liu Zhenmin and John Podesta, Senior Advisor to the President of the United States on International Climate Policy. Relevant officials from both countries attended the meeting.
The meeting reviewed the San Francisco meeting between the heads of state of China and the United States, focusing on energy transition, methane and other non-carbon dioxide greenhouse gases, circular economy and resource efficiency, deforestation, and low-carbon provinces/states identified in the Sunshine State Statement on Strengthening Cooperation to Address the Climate Crisis. Conduct in-depth discussions in areas such as cities and cities, and cooperate on multilateral issues related to the successful hosting of the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Baku, Azerbaijan. The two sides shared their experiences and challenges in their respective climate policies and actions, aiming to effectively respond to the climate crisis and its impacts.
The two sides plan to hold the second "Methane and Non-CO2 Greenhouse Gas Summit" during COP29. Both parties commit to promote bilateral cooperation and capacity building on the deployment of emission reduction technologies and the establishment or improvement of their respective MRV systems and standards to achieve the goal of controlling or reducing methane emissions during the 2020s. Both parties paid attention to the Methane Alert and Response System of the United Nations Environment Programme’s International Methane Emissions Observatory. The two parties will also carry out technical cooperation and capacity building around the measurement and emission reduction solutions of other non-carbon dioxide greenhouse gases.
Both sides look forward to the China-US high-level event on local climate action being held in Berkeley, California, from May 29th to 30th.
