Goal: "Flying" 3 yuan per kilometer, receiving hundreds of intended orders, Shanghai company develops "air taxi"
May 7th is the third anniversary of the establishment of Shanghai Shide Technology Co., Ltd., and the company organized a team building in Suzhou. It took more than two hours to drive from Shanghai to the east coast of Taihu Lake. For a technology company developing "air taxis", this is too slow.
"People often ask, what does Shi's technology do? I always answer that we are doing something that some people find incredible - writing the future of urban air travel." Co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer of the company Jiang Jun said, "Shi's" means "time taxi", and as people often say, it means "flying". "If you take our plane, you can reach Suzhou in 20 minutes."
Jiang Jun said that the "air taxi" may seem fanciful, but in fact it is already close at hand. Especially after the low-level economy was included in the government work report for the first time this year, the market response was very enthusiastic. As the first domestic technology company to develop tilt-rotor electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, Shi Technology has been preparing for the upcoming "take-off" for a long time.
Jiang Jun was born in Linhai, Zhejiang in 1988. He majored in software engineering at university. After graduation, he started a business in Shanghai continuously, spanning multiple industries such as mobile Internet, AI and autonomous driving. "Shanghai is a particularly dynamic place. Whether it is high-quality industrial clusters, diversified entrepreneurial carriers, or multi-sector support systems, it has given young people a good innovation and entrepreneurial environment." Jiang Jun said, for him Personally, these opportunities to try and learn are rare.
While serving as senior vice president of a leading aviation technology company in Shanghai in 2020, Jiang Jun was deeply involved in the planning and market development of eVTOL aircraft, and gained a deeper understanding of the air transportation field. eVTOL means electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft. Compared with traditional helicopters, it has the characteristics of vertical take-off and landing, no need for a runway, pure electric power, more environmentally friendly and quieter, etc. It is especially suitable for short-distance air travel and is regarded as the "air vehicle of the future". taxi".
Realizing that urban air transportation has broad market prospects, in order to let more people understand eVTOL, Jiang Jun registered a public account called "Air Taxi eVTOL" in 2019, focusing on various aspects such as aircraft, urban air transportation, and industry trends. The content carries out industry science popularization and promotes industry development. Through this earliest vertical account in China, he met many like-minded friends, many of whom later became his entrepreneurial partners, including the company’s CEO Huang Yongwei.
Jiang Jun said that their entrepreneurial goal has always been clear - to develop manned eVTOLs with high commercial value with the mission of "providing safe and convenient air travel services to society". "We have always been rooted in Shanghai because many supply chains in the low-altitude economic industry are closely related to the aviation industry. This is a solid foundation for Shanghai to develop this future industry. Facts have proved that our decision was right. Now almost all the leading companies in the industry are recognized All in Shanghai.”
In Jiang Jun's view, the current development of eVTOL is equivalent to that of new energy vehicles around 2015, and is on the eve of explosive growth. However, because of the high technical threshold and financial requirements of this track, only a few companies can ultimately survive the commercialization process. The confidence of Shi's technology to participate in competition lies in its excellent research and development capabilities. Last year, they released China’s first tilt-rotor manned electric aircraft, the E20eVTOL, and completed its first round of flight tests.
"Shanghai brings together outstanding talents in various fields. Although our team is small, more than 85% are technicians, and the average age is only in their early thirties. We are the first company in China to build and fly a tilt rotor. "This is something to be proud of." Jiang Jun said that eVTOL can be divided into three configurations: multi-rotor, composite wing and tilt rotor. The tilt rotor combines the advantages of the other two, which can improve the cost performance of the whole machine. The flight speed is fast, the load-to-load ratio is also high, and the commercial value is high.
They overcame many engineering problems and carried out verification work such as propulsion scale machine, frame machine and prototype machine. Finally, they achieved the first flight of the prototype machine in 2023 and became the first "crab eater". Jiang Jun said that the prototype they developed has completed hundreds of flight tests and plans to complete all test projects of the prototype this year and complete the tilt transition flight. It will achieve airworthiness certification in 2026, becoming the first certified tilting configuration eVTOL in the Asia-Pacific region, obtain a production license, and enter large-scale mass production delivery.
Currently, Shi's Technology has received four rounds of financing and has hundreds of intended orders. While obtaining intended orders from many domestic operators, they have also established in-depth connections with the Middle East, Southeast Asia and other regions, and are steadily exploring overseas markets.
When asked when he would be able to fly at low altitudes at will like in science fiction movies, Jiang Jun smiled and said, "It may take some years. After all, infrastructure construction still takes time. At present, we are mainly implementing the scenarios. It includes scenic spots and intercity air travel, and is especially suitable for travel across waters, mountains, and bay areas. For example, it takes about 3 hours to drive from Shanghai to Nantong across a river, and there may be traffic jams, but it only takes more than 20 minutes to fly there. "
In addition to calculating time accounts, we also need to calculate economic accounts. "The price of a twin-engine, five-seater helicopter is generally 60 million to 70 million yuan. After mass production, the price is 7 million to 8 million yuan." Jiang Jun said that helicopter operating costs are very high, ranging from 30,000 to 30,000 yuan per hour. The price is about 50,000 yuan, so a 10-minute helicopter flight costs several thousand yuan, while an eVTOL flight of the same distance only costs 200-300 yuan.
At present, their customers are mainly general aviation operating companies, such as Shenzhen Eastern General Aviation, Anhui General Aviation Group, etc. In order to reduce costs, customers plan to purchase their products to replace some helicopters. "Our goal after mass production is to provide users with travel services at about 3 yuan per seat per kilometer. We hope that every citizen can afford it, so that eVTOL can enter the daily life of the public."
